A man named Simon is missing. His wife, Hannah, approaches the police for help. It's clear that not all is right with her. It's up to you to find out what happened using only a collection of video clips taken from police archives. It's a simple premise that opens the door for rich storytelling.
This is a game by Sam Barlow, the man responsible for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, a game acclaimed for its dynamic storytelling. Her Story, while obviously smaller in scale, manages to live up to the same standard.
The entire game is spent searching for video clips by inputting keywords into an archive. There's some guesswork and puzzle solving involved, but not much else. This may be too simplistic for some, but for the purposes of telling an intriguing story, that's really all that's required. Viva Seifert's performance as Hannah is exemplary, the script is expertly written, and the plot's many twists and turns will keep you interested to find out more.
This is a game for people who love a good story. Nothing more, and nothing less. Suffice to say, if you need explosions on your screen every few seconds in order to be happy, this game is not for you.
Something to note, however, is that this game is not very long. I managed to reach the end in a few hours. Getting all of the achievements takes quite a bit longer, but either way, the game only costs $5 USD and you're still getting your money's worth.
All in all, I am amazed at what an indie developer, armed with only a small budget and determination can accomplish.
Highly recommended.
