Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Is Looking Good!

I guess that's another one for ye olde wish list...

I realized something today: I'm actually looking forward to the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game! It's developed by Platinum, and it looks like ridiculous fun. Don't believe me? Watch the 7-minute video on IGN, which shows off the first stage, skill upgrades, and even a boss battle.

Platinum knows how to make great action games. The company certainly isn't perfect, and this is license-based fare (which always raises red flags), but the game looks like it should at least be above average. I'm not even a huge Turtles fan (though I do like them and used to watch the cartoon sometimes when I was a kid), but this game looks terrific. What do you think?

Didn't we just do this a few years ago? But I suppose that one was based on the horrible 2014 film and not the latest TV series. But wait, we also had one based on the CG animated TV show, and - Oh, right, that one was also garbage.

Sigh. The TMNT franchise has had a long history of mediocre or awful video games associated with it. I can only recall two there were any good. The first was The TMNT Arcade Game, which was a blast to play when arcades were still a thing. I also recall Manhattan Missions being pretty good, mostly because that game was based on the original comics and not the kiddie TV show.

I keep waiting for the day when we'll see a proper TMNT game or television series based off of the original comics and not the kiddie TV shows. The original comics are, and always will, be the essence of what TMNT is for me - And those books were not meant for children.

Supposedly Mutants in Manhattan starts its own lore and history of the turtles, so that could be a good starting point; however, the fact that "Bebop" and "Rocksteady" are in this game is not very encouraging to me. The visual style also looks really flat and boring.

But the actual fighting mechanics look like they have some promise. The turtles actually look like they can actually can (for once) act like ninjas. What a shocker! I like all the things they can do with the terrain and things like that. I guess I'll reserve final judgement until I see this thing released, but until then, you'll pardon me if I don't keep my hopes up.

In unrelated news, I saw that the IDW comics featuring the TMNT are being collected in hardcover volumes, like IDW is doing with G.I. Joe (which I am collecting). Are the IDW comics generally considered worthwhile? Because if so, I might have to give those books a shot.

Yep. I own the first few volumes. They're definitely worth it, if you wanna go back to the beginning and see what TMNT was all about :)

The thing that concerns me is Platinum also made Transformers Devastation for Activision last year. Devastation had fun combat but everything about it screamed small budget to me. It was only about 4-5 hours long and a lot of assets got heavily recycled by the end.
