User Help > Privacy Policy
The Internet is an exciting place. It can also be annoying and even dangerous. Here at HonestGamers, we are fully aware of the concern users have that their information will be available to the highest bidder any time they join a site or otherwise share their information. With that in mind, below is a description of what this site does and does not do with your information.
Your e-mail
Presently, we do not share your private e-mail address with anyone. This is the e-mail address you provide at the time of registration. It is used strictly for cases where staff need to contact you, and is not viewed by anyone other than site staff. It will be used to send you site updates when necessary (no unsolicited mass mailings have yet been sent to users since the site was founded in 1998), or if a staff member needs to contact you for a different reason, at his or her discretion.
Your name
The name you provide at registration may appear throughout the web site for any number of reasons. For example, it may (and presently is) posted along with your contributions when they are showcased throughout the site. It may also be referenced in regards to any site contests, or in passing on the message boards. There are no restrictions in place on the site regarding the use of your name. If you would rather that your name is not shared, you are encouraged to provide a name other than your real one. We recommend "Mr. Bojangles" but there are plenty of other options.
Your password
The present policy regarding your password is that it really isn't our business. A password is required to access user accounts, so you will need one if you register. The number of places your password is recorded may vary as the site evolves, but one thing will never change: it is kept as secure as possible. While you are still discouraged from using the same password as the one you use on all other sites you visit (it just makes good sense to use different passwords on various sites in case a user on one site guesses your password and then used it to access other sites you might visit), you should know that such information will be kept as secure as possible on this site. Presently, only the chief webmaster has access to your password. Even if its availability extends to include other staff members, the information will never be readily available to standard users.
Your activity
The site monitors activity through the use of cookies. To access some features, users must have browsers configured to accept cookies. This information is compiled and shared throughout the site in the form of raw figures. While the nature of the information collected is subject to change without notice, it is used not to collect specific information about you, but rather to compile data that reflects user activity en masse. This is done to ensure that the site appeals to the broadest possible audience. Specific information about a single user's activity will not be shared outside of the site unless law requires it.
Customized ads
We use third-party advertising companies to serve ads when you visit our website. These companies may use information (not including your name, address, email address, or telephone number) about your visits to this and other websites in order to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you. If you would like more information about this practice and to know your choices about not having this information used by these companies, you are encouraged to contact the companies that serve our ads. They will be able to address any specifics better than we can.
Beginning on April 24, 2009, the DoubleClick DART cookie will be used by Google in the ads served on publisher websites like HonestGamers that display AdSense for content ads. When users visit an AdSense publisher's website and either view or click on an ad, a cookie may be dropped on that end user's browser. The data gathered from these cookies will be used to help AdSense publishers better serve and manage the ads on their site(s) and across the web.
