Hentai vs. Evil (PlayStation 4) review "Two Bs or Not Two Bs"

In a small town surrounded by mountains, on a sunny day, not everything is what it seems. Vehicles have been left unattended in the middle of the road, there are fires set haphazardly, and splats of blood are everywhere. Citizens of this once humble abode can be seen wandering the streets, through neighborhoods, and in the most random of places. Upon closer inspection, you can tell that they are no longer part of the living: frightful faces on full display and covered top-to-bottom with green skin, these inhabitants are now mindless zombies looking for flesh! Joining these roaming hordes are sentient ogres with clubs and scythe-wielding reapers, possibly the origin of such chaos.

But forget about those average mortals-turned-undead. Probably had it coming. There is a greater injustice being committed! Within this town is a living human locked in a cage: a cutesy female, with neck-length white hair and red cheeks, wearing a maroon outfit, gloves, and boots.

Such an affront to humanity can not be tolerated, and a lone hero has stepped up to save these enchanting beauties: a blonde bombshell in a two-piece swimsuit with a gun!

To be more exact, as you spawn into one of three maps, the other two being a pirate bay and a city, the femme fatale you control in third-person is allowed to pick one of three weapons. Choose quickly! As you pick either a shotgun or one of two rapid-fires, the map is loaded with enemies ready to lock on to your location if they're close enough. You can get into the action pretty easily, as its default controls conform to most modern third-person shooters: the triggers aim and shoot, while the face buttons reload and... jump? Jumping literally serves no purpose other than for your character to strike a cutesy pose in the air.

Once things finally get underway and you start spraying an unlimited cache of bullets into the crowd, you'll likely die within the first minute. This is because, if any opponent manages to make contact, your health meter drains crazily fast. Oh no! Oh... no? This may have been an actual threat if it wasn't for the fact that, once you become aware after the first death, you can simply keep away and shoot everyone from a distance. It doesn't hurt that every enemy moves at an incredibly lax pace; not surprising for the zombie hordes, but it is an odd choice making the ogres and reapers move slightly faster. And if you do get seriously hurt, there are plenty of health items scattered around the map.



As you may have realized, this isn't exactly the hardest of games. It doesn't have to be hard to be entertaining, but it will also test your patience in the fun department. Along with the sedated speeds, every single enemy only performs melee attacks. That's a great combination against a player that can unleash projectiles from afar. At the very least, the enemy pace should have increased over time the longer you're alive as some sort of escalation. It does seem like an attempt at a "challenge" was made due to there being difficulty settings... with no noticeable differences... and the presence of objectives. Though, said goals amount to nothing but rescuing the damsel and defeating 12 reapers.

But, truth be told, you weren't interested in this game purely for the shooting action, did you? With something elegantly called Hentai vs. Evil, there's a certain expectation to be had. Evil? Check. Versus? It's happening. Hentai? It's not quite there. At best, the game can be labeled "naughty" with its ability to customize your lady, along with all the women you've rescued. Shockingly, the customization is the most in-depth thing about the game: you can change each character's hair, clothing, thigh and chest size, and their skin color. If desired, you can transform that default two-piece, swimsuit-wearing blonde into a blue-skinned, green-haired, voluptuous beauty in a sweater dress.



However, there's another reason why the game isn't quite hentai: censorship. Specifically, the PlayStation version of the game has been censored. In the original PC version, you can toggle off all the women's clothing, meaning they have the freedom of running around fully exposed while shooting at all those zombies. There's none of that in this version, effectively eliminating the main reason why someone would even bother getting this in first place; if you want the worst version of a below average shooting game, here it is.

You know what's even crazier? The Nintendo Switch version is less censored; while it doesn't go all the way, you're able to see their chests uncovered. How did we go from the 1990s, where games like Duke Nukem 3D were more censored on the Nintendo 64 over the PlayStation 1 version, to the 2020s where a PlayStation 4 game is more censored over the Nintendo Switch version?

Community review by dementedhut (October 29, 2025) Fun fact: the PC Engine versions of Valis are also semi-released out of order. Valis II, Valis III, Valis IV, and then Valis I. This was because the original Valis was released on other systems/computers, so it was later remade for the PC Engine.
