EA Sports cancels NBA Live 13
EA Sports today canceled NBA Live 13, declaring it "not ready" for an October release date, according to a news post on the game's website by Andrew Wilson, EA Sports' executive vice president. Wilson and co. decided to cancel the basketball simulator after looking at it the past few days and realizing it did not meet the high quality experience goals its fans expect.
"Making great games is not easy, and we're just not there yet on NBA Live 13," wrote Wilson. "And rather than launch midway through the season, we're going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year’s game great. This decision puts us on the right track for success well into the future in a rapidly changing industry."
Meanwhile, Live's only other competitor, 2K Sports' NBA 2K series, already has a demo up and running for 2013's offering, and the game is due on shelves Tuesday. EA hasn't released an NBA simulator since NBA Live 10. Live 10's follow-up, a rebranded title named NBA Elite 11 was similarly canceled in 2010, and EA planned to forgo a 2011 release to focus on NBA Live 13.
Live 13 was announced back in February, and I remember sincerely wishing EA the best of luck in their return to the NBA simulation arena. It would appear my well wishes weren't enough. It must be very disappointing to the folks at EA Tiburon, the studio working on the title, but hopefully another year is enough time for the studio to get the game where they'd like it to be.
