My SNES Wish List

Here are 90 additional SNES games I would like to obtain before I stop collecting stuff for that system.

By Jason Venter · April 14, 2016

I love retro games. I don't play them as much as I would like, time constraints being a thing, but I do enjoy collecting them and sometimes diving into my collection and tripping down memory lane.

Today, I decided to put together a list of the SNES games officially released in North America that I would like to purchase in cartridge form. I already own more than 100 games, in cartridge or download form, so I would probably finish up with a collection consisting--between physical and digital--of around 200 games for the system. The list below includes two titles I already own in digital format that I would like to have on cartridges, but otherwise there's no doubling up.

Games on my list aren't necessarily recommended, but they're titles I always wanted to play, or that I did play a lot of when I was a kid but never got around to owning. This list is more for my own reference (as I continue collecting when possible) than yours, but I thought I'd share it here anyway since I put some time into assembling it. Maybe it'll tell you something about my interests and tastes, if you're curious about such things...

Here is the list:

At some point, but probably not today, I should also assemble a list of the NES games I have yet to obtain but have on my mental list. The NES and SNES are the only two systems that I currently have that level of interest in. My obsession with games dropped to healthier levels after that point, so I don't have quite as much to catch up on with the newer systems.

A few comments based on my experiences: Brandish was not great, but it stayed with me. It has that quality.

Skyblazer and Soul Blazer (hereafter known as "The Blazers") are amazing, TMNT IV is a classic (have you not played it??), the Super Adventure Islands are pretty good, Lagoon is horrendous, and I wish I'd gotten a chance to play Sparkster. I'm pretty sure it's the sequel to Rocket Knight Adventures, which was awesome on the Genesis.

Also, let me know when you've won the lottery.

I have played a lot of TMNT IV, and I could swear that at one point I even owned the SNES version. Certainly, I rented and beat it back in the day, and a time or two since. I do like it a lot. I also have the Xbox Live version (no longer available to new purchasers, due to licensing issues) and it is quite faithful, but there's nothing like having the original. The Adventure Island games I have on Virtual Console, but I'm kind of hoping to collect that series and would like to have it all on cartridge. I remember you hating Lagoon, but that doesn't stop me from wanting it because I always used to want to play it when I saw it in various magazines, and that wish hasn't died. It's kind of amazing I haven't yet gotten around to it. Perhaps soon. And Sparkster is one I always wanted to try. I'm not sure if its a proper sequel to Rocket Knight Adventures or a reworked take on it. Either way, it should be good.

Winning the lottery would be nice. I've wasted so much money over the years that I now spend a lot of any money I earn paying interest on old debts. It really sucks. So I'm trying to pay that down, though it'll take a lot of time and energy to do so. Finishing my desired collection of SNES and NES games is something that I expect to take several more years, not a matter of months.

zzz Secret of Evermore. Secret of Mana is, hands down, my favorite game on the console. I actually never heard of Evermore, but a cousin of mine had it and I watched him play it...it looked pretty similar so, of course, I had to pick it up! One of the most disappointing buys of my life. It isn't necessarily a "bad" game, but doesn't hold a candle to Secret of Mana...on top of that I remember some damn absurd forest labyrinth that I ended up having to painfully map out in order to get through.

I know to expect some disappointment from Secret of Evermore. As was true of King Arthur and the Knights of Justice, Secret of Evermore was developed by North American developers. Square and Enix were making serious efforts to expand into the region at that time, and met with what you might call mixed success. They went back to developing stuff mostly in Japan, following a few high-profile failures.
