So I have been reading up on the latest blog posts that Sony is going for a all Digital Future meaning that we will actually never own a PlayStation game ever again.
So Sony has announced that in January 2028 Sony will longer be producing physical discs for their PlayStation systems which will mean that future PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 games and also the upcoming PlayStation 6 will NOT have a disc drive.
This is after they also announced that they will be shutting down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2027 as well as delisting over 550 movies from the PlayStation Store including all licenses to watch them.
Sony also announced previously a few months back when you purchase a game digitally on the PlayStation Store all game purchases have to verify your licenses to play them and if your console is left offline for more than 30 days you can’t play them unless you turn your PlayStation console online again to allow your licenses to be verified.

The reason that Sony is going all digital with their PlayStation system is because they said it is because it is why games cost so much money to purchase. Well for new releases anyway but when you look online in sites like Amazon and Argos as well as Smyths and Sports Direct that they sell physical games that cost way less than the digital versions that sell for full price. So even if Sony removes the ability to play physical versions of games all digital games on the PlayStation Store are still going to cost over £65 for many AAA titles that come out.
So basically now with buying a digital game on the PlayStation Store now you are not actually buying a game but instead paying full price for a long term rental and Sony will decide when you are done with it. It is very disgusting and it is very anti-consumer in every sense of the word.
This has lead to many, many angry PlayStation owners who have cared for physical purchases and sure while some digital purchases have skyrocketed over the past few years but still offered physical options up until now. Now popular streamers including Vtubers and gaming channels are reacting angrily to the decisions to Sony and their digital only future monopoly.
How can we fight back against the decision? Well a group called Stop Killing Games has joined the battle and is prepared to sue Sony for a millions over the digital monopoly and also there are petitions and votes that are there to get Sony to reverse the decisions. Some other countries are seeing Sony’s digital monopoly is illegal and are also prepared to sue Sony for it and we might see Sony going to court sometime over it.
Other groups are also threatening Sony by turning their online internet on their PlayStation systems off as well as not playing their PlayStation systems for a whole week.
I am also joining the fight by no longer buying digital games on any PlayStation systems, I will be deleting any digital games that are currently on my PlayStation 5. I will also remove everything from my digital wishlist and will focus only on buying physical versions of games instead. If a game has a physical disc version I will buy that and if not I will just ignore it.
For this reason alone I have come to a decision to completely stop playing Splitgate Arena Reloaded, a digital PS5 game that I have spent all year playing when it came out as Splitgate 2 back in 2025. This is because I want to support physical media and don’t want that to go and I will make HAWKED my last digital game I play through and won’t play any digital games on my systems anymore. Splitgate and Splitgate 2/Arena Reloaded doesn’t have a physical disc version they will be removed now for that reason. This means now I have to find a new FPS Multiplayer game to main at and one that has a physical disc version that I can play and do good at, and I am not making Call of Duty a main for me no more because Call of Duty can go to hell and die.
