To recap on the drama that has been going on with Sony, recently the month or so Sony has announced that they are shutting down the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2027 meaning that it will be the last console of the 7th Generation of gaming to have its Digital Store close which puts an end to an era that the 7th Gen had for gaming.
Then Sony has also announced that as of 2028 they are no longer going to have physical disc games for their PlayStation Systems meaning that all future PlayStation games for the PS4, PS5 and the upcoming PS6 will be digital storefront only. This is after when they announced that with every digital PlayStation purchase you make for now on you are purchasing a license to play the game not actually own them and if you don’t have your PlayStation console connected to the internet within 30 days after downloading it you will lose the license and have to connect online to restore it. Sony also delisted over 550 movies from their store including all ways of being able to watch them even going as far as removing them from their digital libraries. With digital releases now you would expect games to be cheaper but however the games on the PlayStation Store cost just as much if not even more expensive than buying a physical game.
In other words you do NOT own anything that you purchase from the PlayStation Store now. it is a long term rental with them now deciding when we are done with it and take it away from us. Sony is doing this as a way of creating a digital only monopoly on their systems with how they treat their customers. It is extremely anti-consumer and disgusting in every single way and the way they are handling it is illegal and goes against fair gaming.
People are enraged and are reacting to this through various social media sites and there are groups protesting against the decision such as Stop Killing Games, SKG, DoesItPlay and SM&C have joined together to sue Sony as well as several PlayStation users that are rioting against Sony. There is also the boycott protest where PlayStation players are both signing petitions to get Sony to change their minds about it as well as also a movement where PlayStation owners are shutting off their PlayStation systems from their mains and cancelling their subscriptions in protest.
With the drama and negitivity about Sony and their Digital Monopoly getting worse and worse I have decided to do a couple of things. Firstly I won’t support Sony and their Digital Monopoly in anyway possible, instead I will:
Delete all of my Digital Games off of each of my PlayStation Systems and cancelling all playthroughs of them.
I will remove everything from my Digital Wishlist.
I will only buy and play Physical PlayStation Games and if a Digital Game has a Physical Disc Version Option I will buy that and play it that way.
I will no longer take any game for Free on my PlayStation Plus Subscription and I will not play anymore Live Service Free to Play Games.
All PlayStation Point Cards I buy from now on will be for my PlayStation Plus Subscription so that I can keep playing my games online.
If I have a Digital Game that I have is close to a Platinum Trophy or close to 100% Trophy Completion or is super easy to play through quickly then they will stay until I complete it.
Absolutely no Digital Downloading on any PlayStation System and will only look towards Physical released games that are available.
I will still keep my PlayStation Consoles on and still will play PlayStation games because it still means a lot to me. I spent a long time collecting Trophies, Platinum Trophies as well as buying many, many PS3 games in physical format and started building up a massive PS4 and PS5 physical games collection. I want to keep building up my PS3, PS4 and PS5 physical game collection as well as playing through them.
I want to stay with PlayStation Consoles for longer because it is what I grew up with but what Sony is doing with the PlayStation brand now is just wrong. I want to do different things to convince Sony that physical games mean more to gaming now. I want to support physical gaming more than ever now and I am finding different ways of supporting the No Disc No Buy movement.
I am wishing all groups that are protesting against Sony and the decision making good luck in hopes of getting Sony to change their minds and allow their PlayStation systems to have Physical Copies again. Keep it up and keep letting our voices out loud and clear.
