About Me: Sorry, but I haven't yet shared the information about myself that would typically display here. Check back later to see if that changes, or if I instead choose to remain an enigma. |
Just saw The Departed, and I was pleasantly surprised. A remake of the Hong Kong film, Internal Affairs, The Departed looks at the boundaries between law and lawlessness, family and familiarity, and even within ourselves. It's the story of a cop undercover as a crimial, and a criminal infiltrating the police. Aware of each others' presence, but not their names, it's a cat and mouse game of rooting one another out before they get eaten alive.
It's still two months away, but I am already having to prepare for the holidays. Nothing sucks out the enjoyment of Christmas like working in retail. It gives you an entirely new perspective on things. You can sit there and say that Christmas is too commercial, but until you've worked in retail, you don't know the extent of it. What gets me the most are the kids crying, screaming, and throwing devastating tantrums because they want something. Then the parent says, "Wait and maybe Santa Claus will get it for you." Seriously? You're going to reward that?
You know what I want for Christmas? Nothing. All I care about is using my time off to go see all of my family and friends. I don't want presents, and I don't want to buy presents. I wonder how "no gifts" would go over with the family?
After so many months of procrastinating, I finally got an FM transmitter/recharger for my IPod. Finally, I have music. My car only has a tape player, and my main choices for the radio around here include non-stop nu-metal, asinine pop, or the worst excuse for public radio. I can't tell you what a relief it is. Here's what's playing in my car recently:
U.S. Bombs - War Birth
Ladytron - Light & Magic
Pulse Legion - One Thing
Black Halos - Alive Without Control
As some of you know, I previously lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and would love to get back there. At the same time, some scary stuff has been happening around my old neighborhood. A local bar just got shot up. In another incident, some friends of a friend were robbed at gunpoint on a footbridge crossing the river. There was only $37 among the four people, so the robber told them to jump in the river. When they refused, he pistol-whipped one person, and shot another in the leg.
Hitting a little closer to home, two acquaintances that I know pretty well were mugged this summer. The assailants hit the two guys over the back of the head, beat them up, and ran off with a wallet. Scary stuff.
My goal for the ongoing Team Tournament was to have a new review for each week. Well, that isn't happening. I was disappointed about having to use an old review for last week, and now I have to do it again. There just isn't enough time in the world.
I really don't have anything productive to say right now, so I guess that's it.
I think I got mild food poisoning from the nachos at Denny's restaurant last night. For a while I even resorted to sleeping on the bathroom floor. You know, just in case. Now my stomach gets upset when I try to eat, and I'm completely spaced out due to the lack of sleep.
Those nachos sure were tasty though.
I received my results from the San Francisco Police Department for the first portion of my tests. I passed the written exam with no troubles, but my "...Personal History Questionnaire indicates that I do not meet the [selection process] criteria..." I have a pretty clean background, so the lack of a criminal justice degree and/or military background cut my chances. Looks like a I won't be joining the ranks after all.
On one end, I am disappointed because this was a chance at getting a career I'm interested in, and my ticket to getting out of debt and poverty. On the other end, I'm not distraught about the rejection. I'm trying to focus on my writing and screenprinting, and I was afraid that as a police officer, those interests would fall by the wayside.
The job hunt continues.
