Why Addiction Is The Wrong Word
June 25, 2007

(Let's keep this short and sweet.)PASSION. Somehow, this word is abandoned for the more fearful word: ADDICTION. Could it possibly be that when someone sacrifices much of their livelihood towards the pursuit of success in video games, it is not because of addiction, but because they are passionate about it? You know, like they would a sport - which is a GAME, I might add. Poker, blackjack, paintball, deer hunting, mixed martial arts. Last time I checked, sacrificing most of your livelihood, even for something that involves gambling or violence, can also be called dedication and heart.

I Need A Safe For My Memory Cards
June 16, 2007

Take my games. Take my console. Hey, take my pride as a male. But that will never compare to someone taking my memory cards. Sure, I could just get another one for $20 bucks and upload some game save off of GameFAQs, but that's my blood and sweat. That's me consciously fasting for hours on end, because I had to destroy every boss, clear every side mission, and claim every life container. That's me proving that I have accomplished what I thought was impossible.

And I almost lost my memory cards yesterday when the cleaning lady "misplaced" them. Thank God for her that I can't shoot lasers out of my eyes.

Yet.

Fire Fire Revolution
June 06, 2007

I actually heard of Fire Fire Revolution many months before GameSpot posted a sidebar article on it, but the idea of having real-life consequences for video games is an intruiging yet dangerous one. Would you play Counter-Strike if you were given an electric shock every time you were hit? I mean, much of the reason why people play is to have a space which the players understand that there are no real-life consequences (exluding the lack of sleep and affection towards your lover).Still, would you play a game that had outside effects, like being dumped into a water tank if you were defeated in a fighting game or slapped on the wrist with a ruler every time you did poorly in Brain Age?

Game Authorship: Who Takes The Credit For A Game?
May 24, 2007

The age-old question of whether games are art arrived once again at the 2007 Game Developers Conference, and the answer of yes was met with little resistance. The game industry is reasonably confident in this assertion and continues to develop methods that analyze them as such. Now this message needs to be rearticulated in terms in which other art forms can relate without underplaying any of the many facets which make video games unique. To this end, the question of who receives the credit for creating a game must be resolved. The concept of game authorship needs further examination if the interactive medium is to be respected beyond the margins of the industry.

Last Stop on the 4-Star Train
May 14, 2007

Finally. At least 4 stars on every Guitar Hero song (I and II). And yesterday, I finally - finally - got off at Jordan.

Of course, this means that the five-star train now beckons. There's six songs left... no pun intended. But I feel it's going to be a long ride. I may not be able to see the end of it in this lifetime. In any case, I am completely at ease with all that I have done with the series, and I can't wait for the 80's edition.
