BioShock Infinite delayed to 2013

Ken Levine assures fans it's for the best.

Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite, initially set for a fall 2012 release, has been delayed to Feb. 2013, announced Ken Levine, the game's creative director, today on Irrational's web site. The postponement is necessary to ensure the studio has enough time to apply some "specific tweaks and improvements" to Infinite that'll make the game "even more extraordinary," said Levine.

So it'll hit shelves Feb. 26, 2013.

"I won’t kid you: BioShock Infinite is a very big game, and we’re doing things that no one has ever done in a first-person shooter," wrote Levine in the blog post. "What does this mean for you? It means a bit more waiting, but more importantly, it means an even better BioShock Infinite."

Irrational will be so focused on improving Infinite that the game will be skipping any E3 showings next month, as well as Gamescom in August.

"Preparing for these events takes time away from development, time we’re going to use instead to get the best version of Infinite into your hands in February," said Levine.

While it surely isn't good news for Take-Two, Infinite's publisher, this year, it's surely a bit relieving to me, as I'm still catching up on the avalanche of games that fell on me last holiday season. Plus, with Infinite delayed, at least one industry analysis firm thinks that spells a Grand Theft Auto V release this year. That's good news, right?
