Review Views Have Reset
October 24, 2017

One of you today pointed out to me that review views are really messed up, to put things mildly. I looked into the situation, and unfortunately it appears that when the site was having some issues with page loads a while back, a review page partially loaded and successfully ran a partial query, which resulted in every review record being updated to show 1689 views. That's my best guess at the problem, anyway.

The resulting data was even less useful than if that column in the database had simply been wiped completely, so I went ahead and reset every value to 1 (which is the default instead of 0, for boring reasons I won't outline here). They'll start going up from there, as reviews are viewed.

I wish I could say this will absolutely never happen again, but the truth is that there remains always a very slight possibility that the problem will come around to bug us again at some point. I looked at the source code to try to find a way to safeguard against that incredibly slim possibility (this is the first time it has happened in almost 20 years, after all), but couldn't find one due to the nature of query required.

So anyway, the long and short of it is that the counter has been reset. Reviews should start showing hits again now, and the chart on the Users page will soon go back to being interesting (for those who track that sort of thing). I'm sorry for any inconvenience, but hopefully knowing the reason behind the change helps make it a little easier to take, at least.

I was a little bummed out at first when I read this, but I got over it fast. I'm now intrigued what reviews are going to get the most views starting from here.

Though, I'm not gonna lie: I'll miss seeing my Hello Kitty review be one of my most viewed reviews on the site. I'm still baffled by that.

Y'know what baffles me? Hello Kitty Darth Vader. Explain that one. Anyway, I don't see it as a big deal; any views are good views, and like you pickhut, what will come out on top in a year anyway? Time will tell.

I wondered why my In the Hunt review suddenly gained 8,000.

I was looking at the views and how no matter how many reviews I write, I'm still the same amount of views away from the top 50. I guess I can stop worrying about it now.

Well, shoot. The only thing I regret about this is that I wish had seen where my hits were before the reset. It'll be interesting to see where they stack up now as compared to when they were all first submitted.
