Important Update: Patreon and You
December 14, 2016

I've changed how HonestGamers will use Patreon, going forward, and I figure that's worth at least a quick post. So here goes...

Clicking the Patreon link at the top of most pages on the site formerly led to a page on the Patreon site, where I encouraged people to back HonestGamers. Several of you did, and for that I am grateful. However, in spite of some limited success, Patreon hasn't been working as intended.

The goal when I launched the Patreon campaign was to secure enough funding to pay more writers to produce great content on the site. However, there hasn't yet been a month when the money collected was enough to pay for even the site's hosting costs, let alone start paying writers to produce additional content. And that's my fault, not the fault of the generous people who have been pledging money for months now.

I decided that a better way to make sure those people get money is to let them run their own Patreon pages, and to hopefully give those pages a bit of a megaphone. Now, clicking on the Patreon badge takes you to a page on the HonestGamers site, which lists links to individual Patreon pages. Right now, only my page is displayed (I had to edit the old HonestGamers page). In the future, additional staff pages may be added. User pages can also appear.

If you have a Patreon page that you would like to see linked from HonestGamers, just update your account settings (click Settings from the main page while signed into your account) and include the link. Your Patreon campaign page will then be linked from the site. Once I have a few people signed up and can do more testing, I plan to set it up so that the people who have most recently contributed to the site will see their campaign pages linked, up to a total of 5 or so.

This new setup will better reward frequent contributions to HonestGamers, which Patreon backers should also enjoy. It will reward individual authors who are producing the content that people most enjoy. It will allow me to make better use of my own page, since I won't have to check with a bunch of people before deciding on rewards I can offer to backers. And it will make promotion easier, for everyone.

I haven't finished coding everything. Soon, I hope to add a Patreon badge or link somewhere on review pages, for those who want to take advantage of the feature, so that each review on the site will link to your own Patreon account and give you the opportunity to generate revenue from backers who love what you're doing. I will also add a similar link or button to blog pages. Remember: the link or badge only displays if you update your account settings, so make sure to do that if you're interested in this arrangement. Otherwise, you can safely ignore it.

One final and important note: if you were backing the HonestGamers page on Patreon, you are now backing my page. I put the money toward hosting and other site costs, especially at this early stage in the game. But if you don't want to back me directly, please make sure to remove yourself as a backer within the next couple of weeks or so, before December's fees are charged.

If anyone has any questions about any of the above, feel free to ask them here or to contact me privately by HG Mail. Thanks!
