Review number 500 is posted...
August 25, 2009

Well, I've now officially posted my 500th review on the site, excluding old reviews that I deleted a long time ago. I find it fitting that the game I reviewed was Nintendo-published, since Nintendo is the company that ignited my passion for games and my desire to write about them more than 20 years ago. I'd hoped that the 500th game would be something special, but I wasn't going to go out of my way to make that happen. Fortunately, Nintendo managed to make it happen for me. Metroid Prime Trilogy arrived here a week ago and enjoying its content these past few days has been a real treat.

I announced awhile back that I would be cutting back on my reviewing, and that's still the plan... but first you can look forward to a bunch more reviews spaced out over the next several weeks. I may have psyched myself out a bit regarding the magical 500th review. Now, for better or worse, it's written. Anything I write now is just a bonus and hopefully I can fall into a comfortable groove again where every new review doesn't feel like pulling teeth.

Unless at some point in the distant future I find myself within spitting distance of 1000 reviews, I've probably passed the last benchmark in that regard that I'll ever set. Maybe now I can just go back to having fun with it. :-)

It's tough to reach a milestone you worked a long time for. I thought I'd give up after certain FAQ and image milestones. If you're conscientious at all, you want to do something special for, say, #500, but you don't want to press for it, but there's no sense delaying...

...and it's as good an excuse as any to take a step back and take care of other stuff later. You may never get a trophy for this but you should enjoy it, because you've done something that was important to you and did it well. And you had the whole maintaining a website thing on the side, too.

Congrats.

Now please fulfill my request I made more than a month ago.

How the hell did you get Nintendo to send you an advance copy of that? I'm jealous.

You know......milestones like this make the ones I'm always bragging about seem a bit less awesome.

500.....damn, that's a crazy number. I feel like I've been doing this for an eternity and I'm only at 250-something or something like that.

Congrats on that. Now, what you need to do to freshen things up is ONLY review games that the rest of us request you to review. I'm starting with........ Sneak-n-Peek on the A2600. 500 words by tomorrow!

Nintendo sent Metroid Prime Trilogy without me even having to ask for it, which was nice--oh, so very nice!--but not the way things usually go. Generally, I have to contact Nintendo and various other publishers for each individual title, though more publishers now are starting to send stuff automatically since the site has proven itself.

As far as taking review requests, I'd like to do that at some point, but that'll probably come after I burn through my current backlog (which refuses to shrink) and after I take some "me time" to play games I've been putting off for too long. I figure that'll take care of my gaming through early 2012 or so...

Speaking of which, your Prime Trilogy review was great. A nice fit for number 500.

Thanks for saying so. I just read through it again and found two embarrassing typos, which I've now fixed. Otherwise, I like my own review (always good).

My plan was to use the review for the final week in the Team Tournament, if my team made it, but we all know how that went. Still, I like to think that it would have fared well. I'm still excited about heading into my next 500 reviews, too, but I'll be taking it more slowly. Soon. After my backlog, of course... the backlog that never ends.
