Outlast
First-person horror fare set in an asylum, except the protagonist actually has a solid reason to be there. So many cheaper games have you entering abandoned asylums just for the hell of it, which no one in their right mind would do. Then there's the movie SXTape... Anyway, what I like most about this one is the paranoia it builds. You never know if an approaching patient is going to attack you or just blather on about some random thing while leaving you alone. Hell, some of them even dispense a bit of backstory, so they can even prove beneficial.
Elliot Quest
So far, I'm of the opinion that this is the game Zelda 2 should've been. I do like that I'm not being led around by a leash and just figuring out where to go from one segment to the next. My only qualm lies with the presentation, which looks fittingly old school, but overly crude just the same.
Catherine
You know, this game would be amazing if not for its squirrely play control. Like, why is turning without stepping or climing so needlessly difficult? That more than anything has led to most of my demises. Still, someone somehow made a puzzle game revolving around block pushing that isn't terrible or boring, and that's commendable. Plus, I never thought I would find myself invested in a game story about a dude having an affair, but here we are.
Fortress of Hell
I've been threatening to start this one. We'll see when I do...
Blasphemous
Salt & Sacrifice: Now in Catholic Guilt Flavor! It's good, by the way...

honestgamer - April 21, 2025 (03:10 PM) There's a lot to love in Elliot Quest. If it had been that slightest bit better in the visuals department (and maybe the audio), it would have been a modern classic, instead of just a really good game. And yes, Catherine is way better than it has a right to be. But then, look at its pedigree! |

overdrive - May 23, 2025 (08:38 AM) Blasphemous was great! Just the sort of game I love to play. Creepy world, metroidvania, tough combat that gets compared to Souls stuff even if it's side-scrolling 2D. Reminds me that I was mildly annoyed when GRIME got taken down from PS Plus and I didn't get a chance to finish it. Blasphemous was a decent bit better for me (GRIME relied really heavily on the parry-counter and that's not my preferred way to play), but I do like that sort of gaming vibe. |
