Family emergency
August 06, 2018

I am typing this post on my phone, in a hospital waiting room halfway across the state from my apartment. So I will keep it brief...

While fighting Oregon wildfires on farmland where he works (or adjacent to it), my dad was driving a Caterpillar vehicle. It got caught on an embankment of some sort and rolled over. My dad was in the cab and avoided being crushed but was still seriously injured. He is scheduled for surgery tonight on his spinal column, but that may be pushed back some and maybe even until tomorrow.

This is not the first such surgery my dad has had to endure in his life, having crashed his motorcycle around 15 years prior. This new injury has some risk of being complicated by the prior one, but we are told the prognosis is good despite obvious risks associated with what is by necessity a delicate surgery.

I am with my dad, my mom, my wife and other close family as we support one another and hope for the best resolution possible. That means I will miss some work and am away from my computer for another day, if not more. I don’t know how often I will be checking in as the situation develops, but I hope all goes well and I will be back home with good news before long. Thanks for your understanding!

Jesus, that's rough -- I'm very sorry to hear it. I hope everything goes as well as is possible for your dad in surgery.

Oh, that's awful. I hope everything goes as well as possible.

Don't worry about the site. We can look after that between us. You make sure your family is okay; I sincerely hope everything works out for the best.

Fancy filling in Jason's RotW slot for a few, Marc?

If nobody else steps up, I'll do it, no problem.

That sounds horrible. Do what you have to do, man, and I hope things work out for the best.

Sorry to hear that. Just do what you have to do, don't worry about us; your family comes first.

Thank you for all the kind comments, everyone!

My dad had surgery to tend to his spinal cord yesterday late at night, and got out of surgery at 11PM because people kept coming in with emergency cases (including a surprise brain surgery of all things). The surgeon was very happy with how the surgery went, and today, so was my dad. He is feeling much better and that is almost a problem because he wants to get back to doing things before he has had time for all of the healing to properly take.

For now, things look good, so my wife and I headed back home and just arrived back at our apartment. We both have work scheduled tomorrow (she missed a couple of days for this, and I missed one, but we anticipate we will still have our jobs when we show up for our next scheduled shifts, as we called in and such), and then we can relax because we both have a couple of days off.

Assuming there are no new, unexpected emergencies, things should be back to normal and I shouldn't need anyone to fill in for me on RotW. But thanks for being willing, Marc!

(Honestly, this all went much better than we had a right to expect it would. There may be lingering issues that need tending to, but right now I think everyone is much happier with the aftermath of the accident and surgery than I think anyone expected to be.)

I wasn't really willing -- I knew your dad would be okay. ;)

Sorry you had to go through this, Jason, but I'm glad things appear to be going well. Hope that continues and everything will return to normal soon.
