Sonic CD (Sega CD)

Sonic CD review (SCD)

Reviewed on August 16, 2004

I have quite a collection of Mega CD games, ranging from fast paced fighters, razor sharp shooters and quite a few of those blurred FMV games that gave you a damn headache to play. One game that stands out in my room though is Sonic CD, a definite classic without a shadow of a doubt and probably one of the better Sonic games of the bunch and believe you me it takes Sonic Heroes and rips it to shreds. Heck, it even beats Sonic 3 in some areas and by taking classic Sonic style gameplay and blendin...
Jurassic Park: The Lost World (Arcade)

Jurassic Park: The Lost World review (ARC)

Reviewed on August 01, 2004

I usually dislike games that are based on movies, especially if the game seems to follow every aspect of the movie accurately. The gameplay is just a rundown of what you’ve already seen and you know how the story is going to be resolved and also you know the twists in the story. However, a lot of movie games nowadays tend to lead off from the main story and create sub-stories that follow the real plot from behind.
Street Fighter II' Champion Edition (Arcade)

Street Fighter II' Champion Edition review (ARC)

Reviewed on July 21, 2004

Street Fighter 2: Championship edition was the first revamp of the original World Warrior. Capcom hit solid gold with this version but as they continued the series it lost a lot of its charm and as usual Capcom continually upgraded the game creating many sub series like Street Fighter Alpha, and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and so on and so forth. When push comes to shove SF2CE is the most enjoyable out of the lot. With classic 2-D fighting action and some of the most memorable theme songs you...
Ecstatica (PC)

Ecstatica review (PC)

Reviewed on July 13, 2004

Ecstatica is a survival horror game that few have played and many have missed out upon. Unlike most games of the genre which tend to start off slowly and allow the horror to slowly creep up on you with chilling awe it kind of throws you in the middle of it with horrid creatures roaming around after the seemingly innocent young traveller who has no idea what his or her (you can pick the sex of the character) fate is. He arrives at the small village of Tirich in hope of picking up some water for...
Golden Axe (Arcade)

Golden Axe review (ARC)

Reviewed on July 12, 2004

Golden Axe is a game that will remain close to me until they shut the lid on my coffin. For over a decade me and some of my close friends have beaten this game countless times together and also solitarily although I had finished the console translation of the game on Sega’s own Mega Drive, or Genesis, whatever! It was years, however until I actually played the original Arcade version of the game, and I was almost blown away with not just the graphical and sound differences but also the massive ...
Super Hang-On (Genesis)

Super Hang-On review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 12, 2004

One of my least favourite genres of games are racing games and although a few of them have appealed to me over the years. One of these games was “Super Hang-on” for the Sega Genesis or Mega Drive, a motorbike racing game that was the sequel to the Master System game “Hang on”. The 16-bit version was released on the Arcade as well as the Genesis but that’s not being reviewed.
E.V.O.: The Search for Eden (SNES)

E.V.O.: The Search for Eden review (SNES)

Reviewed on July 11, 2004

E.V.O was a bizarre and original SNES game that mixed elements from an RPG with that of action platform game, adding it’s own unique elements producing a very original game that was interesting to play through and also providing new features that most gamers hadn’t experienced before. The game also had a very strange storyline that absorbed various ideas from the story of Creation and the Charles Darwin theory of evolution. Two theories of life that most people tend to believe in and also disp...
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck (Genesis)

World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 05, 2004

This game unlocks loads of great memories of me and my best mate sitting for hours on end playing World of Illusion on the Sega Mega Drive. I was only a kid when I first played it and was instantly hooked for hours on end with the games quirky platform fun and also the ability to play my favourite Disney characters, Mickey, who had previously starred in another Mega Drive favourite of mine Castle of Illusion and for the first time ever, the raging fury of Donald Duck. The plot of...
Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron (Genesis)

Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 05, 2004

Rummaging through the amount of platform games on the Sega Genesis it was actually hard to find one that was a stand out from the crowd. Apart from the Sonic series there weren’t that many great games on it. Granted there were a few other that Sega made that were great but it seemed to me that after you went through the games developed in house it was seemingly impossible to find a good and original platform game. Sega had to play by this and after releasing and scoring with Sonic they had to ba...
The Cyber Shinobi (Sega Master System)

The Cyber Shinobi review (SMS)

Reviewed on July 05, 2004

It’s sad, finding a flop in a series that has produced great games, the black sheep as you will. Every series has one, even the most popular games have one, Mario had Super Mario Bros. 2, Sonic had Sonic 3D blast, Zelda had Majoras Mask and Metroid had the dreaded Metroid Prime on the Gamecube. Shinobi also had one of those bad games, the twisted and battered Cyber Shinobi released in 1990 on the Sega Master System. I was upset and disappointed, as a huge fan of the series I found this one a bit...
Street Fighter (Arcade)

Street Fighter review (ARC)

Reviewed on July 05, 2004

Capcom's “Street Fighter” series was the progenitor of fighting games and today it is still respected in the hearts of beat-em-up fans and general gamers alike. When you think of Street Fighter I guarantee you will immediately think of Street Fighter 2 Championship edition, possibly the most famous fighting game in history. The original Street Fighter however remains almost forgotten now probably due to the reason it mainly lay in the arcades of the late eighties and was knocked aside for the go...
Columns (Genesis)

Columns review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 04, 2004

Columns puts you in a position where you have to stack jewels in sets of three on top of each other. If you get three jewels of the same shape and colour in a stack, no, a column then you will get a nice range of points. You can also get them diagonally as well as vertically. When the jewels are levered down you have a few seconds to change the combination of the jewels enabling you to connect more often.
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder (Arcade)

Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder review (ARC)

Reviewed on July 04, 2004

People who have played through Golden Axe 2 on the Genesis were probably pretty happy to find that it followed reasonably close to the original. It wasn’t as fun as the last game but it was fun enough to sit and play through with a friend once or twice before it died on you. The truth is though most knowledgeable fans had a craving for the arcade only Golden Axe 2:The revenge of Death Adder which didn’t make it into the homes of anyone and was left to be forgotten about in arcades and leisure ce...
Wonder Boy (Sega Master System)

Wonder Boy review (SMS)

Reviewed on June 29, 2004

Wonder boy was one of Sega’s primary creations in the mid-eighties just before the emergence of Alex Kidd and the even more popular Sonic the Hedgehog. It spawned about five sequels that started on Sega’s 8-bit console and finished on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in the mid-nineties. It’s never been reborn since it’s death in 1994 with “Monster World 4”. The games tended to be platform games with some role-playing hints to it but fans remember it for it’s sword fights and fantasy where you contro...
Blackthorne (Sega 32X)

Blackthorne review (32X)

Reviewed on June 25, 2004

The Sega 32X. One of the most bashed, beaten and humiliated piece of technology ever to ever enter anybody’s home, well in the last ten years anyway. This Genesis add-on did not reach the success of its predecessor, which was a real shame. When you think of the mistakes that were made in the releasing of this console, like timing and the price of it they could really been prevented and then I guess maybe the 32X could have been a small success instead of gargantuan failure. Anyway, one of the ga...
The Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis)

The Revenge of Shinobi review (GEN)

Reviewed on June 24, 2004

Shinobi was one of the game series that made Sega. Shinobi was originally an arcade game before being ported onto the Sega Master System in the 80's. What followed was a series of games for the Master System and also onto Sega's 16-bit console the Genesis. The Revenge of Shinobi was Mr.Mushashi's first 16-bit adventure and was definitely one of the best games on the system until the Genesis died in 1997. Once, again Sega had showed their skill at making great action games without a loud and colo...
Last Battle (Genesis)

Last Battle review (GEN)

Reviewed on June 24, 2004

Imagine a world plagued by the aftermath of a deadly and destructive war, a post apocalyptic nightmare now ruled by rampaging and looting biker gangs who go from town to town raiding the survivors of much needed food and water and murdering defenceless people just for the fun of it. Also consider the fact of a power hungry king ruling over what is left of the world with an iron fist with a large vicious army ready to obey his every command. Sounds like hell on earth doesn’t it. Well it’s the f...
Altered Beast (Arcade)

Altered Beast review (ARC)

Reviewed on June 24, 2004

As I pick through the mind of retro gamers and those who dig “old school” I have never found a fan of Altered Beast. “Boy! That game stinks!” is usually the response I get and when I defend it I get something like “What the **** are you on?” It seems, now the mist has well cleared and the cobwebs have now settled on this archaic action classic and most people are now ready to forget it, despite Sega’s attempts to re-launch it on more up to date systems.
Mega Man: The Power Battle (Arcade)

Mega Man: The Power Battle review (ARC)

Reviewed on June 24, 2004

Mega Man: The Power Battle was a fighting game in the arcades featuring the Blue Bomber, his friends and the cast of unforgettable “men” from his various other hits on the NES and SNES. It contained a selection of bosses from the series and threw you in numerous confrontations against these with the ability to play as Mega Man, his bro, Protoman and their rival/ally Forte, whom I had never heard of until I played this game as to be honest I ain’t a huge Mega Man fan.
Psycho Fox (Sega Master System)

Psycho Fox review (SMS)

Reviewed on April 29, 2004

What connotations to you get when you put the words Psycho and Fox together? Possibly your mind will come up with some bizarre images but I bet that you won’t even come close to what the game Psycho Fox is like. When I first head of this game I was in wonder about the nature of the character that I could play. Was he an ordinary fox with simple ambitions or was it something more?
