Mega Man: The Power Battle (Arcade) review

"Mega Man: The Power Battle was a fighting game in the arcades featuring the Blue Bomber, his friends and the cast of unforgettable “men” from his various other hits on the NES and SNES. It contained a selection of bosses from the series and threw you in numerous confrontations against these with the ability to play as Mega Man, his bro, Protoman and their rival/ally Forte, whom I had never heard of until I played this game as to be honest I ain’t a huge Mega Man fan. Mega Man: The Power Battle was a fighting game in the arcades featuring the Blue Bomber, his friends and the cast of unforgettable “men” from his various other hits on the NES and SNES. It contained a selection of bosses from the series and threw you in numerous confrontations against these with the ability to play as Mega Man, his bro, Protoman and their rival/ally Forte, whom I had never heard of until I played this game as to be honest I ain’t a huge Mega Man fan.

The menu screen enables you to pick one of the three characters and then one of the three worlds. Each world contains bosses from the various Mega Man games; one level is from Mega Man 1-3, then 3-6 and finally 7. Just like those games you’ll be presented with a selection screen in where you can choose your opponent, or world in this case and you’ll be flung into battle with your selected boss.

Thus, what follows will be one epic battle between your selected character and your chosen opponent. You’ll find that the three playable characters play similar to each other, firing projectiles, being able to charge up your shot to do more damage. After dodging insane projectiles and speedy foes you can collect power ups from each enemy you defeat and you can use this weapon to aid you in the next fight and you will eventually collect a good array of weapons and will be able to switch from one to the other with the push of a button. One handy feature is that certain weapons will affect certain enemies in different ways, for example using an Ice Slasher from evil Eskimo Ice Man and use it on Heat man then it will do more damage than normal etc.

The game is fast paced and addictive and even when you’ve finished all three games you’ll want to go through it all over again. Some of the bosses are really tricky to overcome and you may find that most of your victories may be luck and not skill due to the freakishly speedy nature of the game and you may find that the one cheap shot will win the fight and not tactical advances. This game is for those who love melee style fighting games but it you enjoy more technical fighters then keep away from this one. Although I reckon most people will leave the arcade with pleasant experiences.

Despite being average at its core, Super Fantasy Zone certainly possesses a unique charm and pleasant aesthetics. Taking a similar structure as its predecessor, Super Fantasy Zone combines the cartoonish buoyancy of any 16-bit platform game and the fast-paced action of any other 16-bit shooter to create a creative blen...

Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 (Sega 32X)

To this day, I have no idea why I'm a 32x fan. I mean, I know the entire concept of the 32x was stupid and that the majority of the 32x game library (if you can call it a library. I think bookshelf would be a more appropriate description) was mediocre. Yet, I still have some hideous attachment to the add-on, despite no...

INXS: Make My Video (Sega CD)

Now, I’ve only played a handful of games that I’d describe as truly awful. These games were either unplayable due to horrible controls, an awful grasp of the subject matter or they were just plain boring. However, despite my exposure to these horrible titles, nothing in the world could prepare me for the sheer atrocity...
