Lunar Remastered Collection releases this April
The game will be available both physically and digitally on multiple platforms.
GungHo Online Entertainment America announced today that Lunar Remastered Collection will be available starting April 18, 2025. The compilation includes both Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, originally released on the PlayStation.
According to the release, the game will retail for $49.99 USD/€49.99 EUR, which gets you the digital edition. If you would prefer to get physical, that adds another 5 in either currency, depending on whereabouts you live.
Lunar Remastered Collection is planned for Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (by way of Steam). It will be compatible with newer Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 hardware, but the older platforms have a larger install base and it seems GungHo was content to focus its attention there. The Switch version will theoretically play great on whatever the Switch successor winds up being called, as well, since Nintendo has indicated the device will be backwards-compatible.
When Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete released in North America, it received a lot of attention from publisher Working Designs, who localized the title with additional dialogue and animation. While it was received favorably at the time--for the most part--the game now might feel a bit dated due to some of the in-jokes and such. For better or for worse, this new release will include a new English voiceover, to go with subtitle support for two additional languages.
Besides the new voiceover and prettied up visuals, the remastered collection now includes widescreen support and various quality-of-life updates that include customizable battle and strategy settings. That should make it easier to endure the frequent turn-based battles, which modern audiences don't always appreciate because they often prefer to point their sword at an enemy and mash buttons to make it go away.
One final feature mentioned in today's press release is the ability to play the classic PSX version of the games, originally developed by Alfa System and Vanguard, or to go with the new editions. It's always nice when a compilation on modern hardware allows a person to closely approximate the original play experience once available on hardware that may now be less conveniently accessible.
The Lunar games have been classics since their Sega CD debut, and while I still have my PlayStation editions sitting on a shelf in my office, I appreciate the opportunity to add them to my collection on more current hardware. This compilation was one of the ones I've most hoped to see for more than a decade now. Now if only someone would see to a few others, like Shadow Hearts and Lufia. A guy can dream, right?
