It Takes Two is available today on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC, publisher Electronic Arts announced today. The game's goal is to marry story and play mechanics "like never before" and keep players entertained "until the very end."

Developed by Hazelight Studios, a Swedish company founded by Josef Fares (best known for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons) in 2014, It Takes Two introduces players to Cody and May, a "clashing couple" of individuals who must overcome their differences to escape a fantastic world.

"We've got a real game-changer here and the co-op genre is going to have no idea what hit them," said Fares. "There will be times the game will have you laughing, other times when it will pull at your heart strings and even moments where your pulse is racing because the gameplay is just that frantic. It's all there, and we can't wait to hear what fans have to say about it."

Cody and May have been transformed into dolls by a magic spell (what else?), and they face surprises around each corner as they progress through a metaphorical adventure. The pair of heroes are on the brink of acrimonious divorce, but maybe this outing is just the therapy their union needs... if they can survive it.

"Hazelight goes beyond innovation and are true disruptors in their approach to game making, building experiences that bring players together in original ways," said Steve Pointon of Electronic Arts. "They are in every sense electronic artists and we are honoured to have supported them with their inspiring vision for It Takes Two, an action adventure that intimately blends humour, heart and gameplay in a co-op experience like no other."

Electronic Arts was probably confident lending its support in part because Hazlight Studios previously developed A Way Out, which was a critical darling and even won a BAFTA award.

It Takes Two will set you back $39.99 USD, and is available as a full game download at that MSRP (with a 10% discount available to EA Play members). A "friend's pass" edition is also available to everyone for free, offering the entire first level of the game. After that, only one of two friends must purchase the game so everyone can keep playing through the adventure.
