Not everyone likes clowns, courtesy of Stephen King, but a lot of people still do and that makes a clown the perfect protagonist for a side-scrolling platform. Or so seem to believe the people at M1 Clouds, who have announced they will be releasing a game called Ayo the Clown on Nintendo Switch and PC this spring.

Ayo the Clown is a "not-so-average" clown searching for his vanished but still beloved dog, Bo. His journey will take him through eight regions of the sort you might expect from a children's platformer: the Hills, a Water World and even Candy Land.

Along the way, the clown will meet friendly people and interesting creatures who aid him in his search. There are also foes, however, and Ayo will deal with them using water balloons, balloon swords, toy hammers, dinosaurs, helicopters, tanks... all the usual stuff you might expect from a clown.

Today's press release promises larger than life bosses and the sort of environments that will allow Ayo to wall jump, slope slide and even stomp. If you didn't know better, you might almost mistake him for your garden variety plumber, with an arsenal like that!

"It's been a dream come true creating video games so we're very excited to bring Ayo the Clown to PC and Switch this year," said Xiu Liang, game director at Cloud M1. "We wanted to create a game that harks back to the platformers of yesteryear but with a modern day twist and fun artstyle to boot. We know you'll fall in love with Ayo and his friends while having a great time on his wacky adventure."

Cloud M1 isn't an especially familiar name, which is because it began as a studio responsible for 3D animation projects, commercials and CG. The team decided from there to enter the mobile space and now consoles and PC, and Ayo the Clown is more ambitious than anything said team has yet attempted. It shouldn't be far off now, so keep an eye out for it if platforming clowns are your thing.
