The Old Ones have plans and now you have the chance to thwart them in Chronicle of Innsmouth: Mountains of Madness, which released today on Steam and is ready for you to download it. But are you ready for a deep dive into the Cthulhu Mythos?

Developed by Psychodev, Mountains of Madness is the second installment in the Lovecraftian point-and-click adventure series. It is presented in the style of old LucasArts classics you may once have known and loved, mixed with a liberal dose of occult madness.

Players assume the role of Lone Carter, an investigator seeking answers after a narrow escape from Cthulhu-related shenanigans of the potentially fatal variety. He hopes to find the truth behind a series of mysterious deaths and disappearances, ideally without becoming a victim himself.

Mountains of Madness takes place ten years before the previous game in the series. It was funded at least in part by a 2018 Kickstarter campaign, and is based primarily on the novella of the same name. As the script comes from a Lovecraft expert, you should expect both authenticity and some Easter eggs to go with it. Just check out this list of official game features:

  • A mature, horrifying story, combining the thrilling mystery of a detective story with a cosmic horror setting.

  • Inspired by The Mountains of Madness, but with many original elements to surprise you at every corner.

  • Test your wits and deduction skills with clever puzzles, logical but challenging.

  • Interact with many characters, both original and taken from Lovecraft’s works. Play as detective Lone Carter, but also as iconic Lovecraft characters as Abdul Alhazred – and even H.P. Lovecraft himself!

  • Retro art style, inspired by the early 90s Lucasarts classics.

  • A brilliant unsettling original soundtrack, full of tension and mystery, to underline the disturbing events of this story.
We plan to weigh in with a review at some point in the not-terribly-remote future, so look forward to that. Or you could always buy the game on Steam right now and enjoy a 10% launch discount off its regular price of €17.99/$19.99/£15.49.
