Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - HD Remaster will arrive soon on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC, Atlus announced today in a press release. The game is due to release on May 25, 2021 as a Standard Edition, or four days sooner for those who invest in the Digital Deluxe Edition.

In Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - HD Remaster, the world has just gone through an ethereal apocalypse known as the Conception, which leaves most life... not alive. You're one of the lucky ones who survived the event, though, and you'll roam the streets of Tokyo amidst a demon revolution in one of the darker RPGs of its time.

Originally released in Japan in February of 2003, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was the first entry in the popular Shin Megami Tensei main series to be localized, as far as I can recall. It made quite the impression on me at the time, and was one of several titles released around that period that finally led to Atlus becoming a bigger deal in the west.

On the newer platforms, the game features:

  • Remastered 3D models and backgrounds

  • Additional difficulty settings for players of all skill levels

  • Suspend save – save your progress whenever you need!

  • Voiced audio – choose between Japanese and English VO

  • An alternate branch featuring Raidou Kuzunoha
According to a press release, the release provides fixes, including patches implemented since the Japan release. There also is a pre-order offer for those who purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition, which is priced at $69.99 USD compared to $49.99 USD for the Standard one.

The Digital Deluxe Edition includes:
  • Full game download

  • Exclusive early access on May 21

  • Maniax Pack (featuring Dante from Devil May Cry)

  • Chronicle Pack (featuring Raidou from Devil Summoner)

  • Merciful Difficulty (an easier setting for newcomers)

  • Mercy and Expectation Map Pack

  • SHin Megami Tensei BGM Pack
If you're thinking about playing Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for the first time by purchasing this remaster, that's excellent. Just know that the game is notoriously difficult, and modern players who aren't used to that sort of challenge may very well find that they have a more enjoyable experience playing on the new, easier setting. No one will ever know!
