The Colonists stakes a claim on consoles in 2021
The indie sim is moving beyond the PC to reach Switch, PlayStation and Xbox later this year.
Auroch Digital announced today that The Colonists is bound for Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year. That should make it available for a super wide audience, which seems like it almost has to be the entire point.
Released on Steam in late 2018 and on the Epic Games Store just last month, The Colonists lets players direct cute robots to build a settlement on an alien planet through the power of automation. It takes its cues from the likes of The Settlers and Anno, two franchises you might know and love.
"Harvest resources and set up production lines," encourages the press release. "Construct road, boat, and train transport systems. Discover new lands and battle for survival. Increase the complexity and reap huge rewards as you chase productivity zen."
That all sounds pretty swell, especially the "zen" part. And the game includes both peaceful and military campaigns to suit your tastes, along with a sandbox mode and challenge trophies. It sounds like you choose your own stress level.
New to the console versions of the game are new controls, a controller optimized UI to go with them, and also new robot hats. We don't know about you, but we're getting a little bit irked that so many games featuring robots have been released over the years and yet very few of them have given the robots hats. So it's nice to see this disgrace finally addressed, if only slightly.
The Colonists looks like it could be a compelling, relaxing use of your time when it arrives on consoles later this year. Ahead of that, you can sign up for an official mailing list and be entered to win one of 10 copies of the game on console. Nice!
