Beyond a Steel Sky heads to key consoles later this year

The sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky already comes with a solid reputation following its PC release.

Publisher Microids and developer Revolution Software announced today that they are teaming up to bring Beyond a Steel Sky to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and even Nintendo Switch. The game will be available in digital and retail editions later this year.

Beyond a Steel Sky is the sequel to the PC classic, Beneath a Steel Sky. Already available on Apple Arcade and Steam, it features art direction by Dave Gibbons, otherwise best known for his work on the Watchmen property. Our own Gary Hartley, who usually does a good job of avoiding games people might actually have heard about, risked his indie cred to review the PC version of Beyond a Steel Sky last year. He had mostly good things to say about it, which is rather unlike him.

Beyond a Steel Sky comes from creator Charles Cecil, also known for the Broken Sword series. It takes place a decade after the events depicted in Beneath a Steel Sky, immersing players in Union City. The press release calls the resulting adventure "hugely ambitious," but then, press releases do tend to say favorable things about the games they reference. It just so happens we agree.

"Signing this publishing deal with the renowned Revolution Software studio delights us!" said Stéphane Longeard, CEO at Microids. "We're thrilled to give players the possibility to (re)discover the long-awaited sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky on consoles by diving into a captivating story supported by clever gameplay mechanics and gorgeous graphics."

The delight was apparently contagious, because check out this next quote.

"I am delighted to be working with Microids," said Charles Cecil, Revolution Software's founder, "a company with such a great reputation for publishing high quality adventures -- they are the ideal partner for Beyond a Steel Sky, our most ambitious adventure to date."

But you haven't yet heard from Dave Gibbons, who caught the "thrilled" bug and had the following comment to offer: "Revolution has built an excellent reputation for writing intelligent adventure games that combine high drama with humor - leaving players not sure whether to laugh, gasp or both. I am thrilled with how Beyond a Steel Sky has turned out - it surpasses my expectations in every way."

As you can imagine, we are both delighted and thrilled to be able to share so many neat quotes in this story, and we look forward to probably getting our hands on a console version of Beyond a Steel Sky at an undetermined time later this year or at some point beyond that. Are you ready to see what lies on the other side of that steel sky?
