Nintendo of America this evening announced plans for the weekend's Maximus Cup event in Tetris 99, and those plans include a certain plumber and an angry Koopa. Players who are on the ball can acquire a special theme that won't be available after the timed event.

According to the press release, the Tetris 99 20th Maximus Cup event, running from 11PM (PST) on March 4 and ending at 10:59 (PST) on March 8 will allow players to earn points based on their placement in each match they play. Earning 100 points during the event will unlock a theme featuring background art, music and Tetrimino designs inspired by Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.

Bowser's Fury features a giant Bowser who has lost control. Mario collects Cat Shines and even teams up with Bowser Jr. in an attempt to return Bowser to normal. The new content has proven quite popular with players and critics, and Nintendo is wrapping up its 35th anniversary celebration of the plumber and his exploits, so this event seems ideally timed.

If you have a Nintendo Switch Online account, you can play Tetris 99 for free, and access a variety of other content (including Super Mario Bros. 35, playable through March 31). This sounds like it would be a terrific time to hop in and joy a little more Tetris in battle royale mode, so maybe we'll meet online for a showdown over the weekend? Stranger things have happened!
