Rule of Rose and Chulip developers post poll to gauge interest in their classic games

Onion Games is looking into the possibility of giving some of the team's past successes new life on current hardware.

Onion Games, a developer and publisher recently best known for the quirky roguelite, Dandy Dungeon, has posted a 7-day poll to determine what level of interest consumers might have in playing some of its older games on newer hardware. Key titles mentioned include Rule of Rose and Chulip.

For those unaware, Onion Games is a small new indie studio in Japan comprised of team members who worked on not only the two above games, but also on other hits such as Little King's Story, Rez, Chibi-Robo! and even Super Mario RPG. They are proud of their reputation as "eccentric" developers, and now they're trying to decide where to focus their attention next.

As an aside, Onion Games recently released Moon on the Nintendo Switch, an enhanced port of a PlayStation title that previously wasn't available outside Japan. That re-release scored quite well with critics, and the poll is also attempting to determine whether there's interest in a physical release of moon or of Dandy Dungeon. As if that's not enough, the studio recently announced it is working on a new sandbox RPG.

Would you like the opportunity to play Rule of Rose or Chulip on platforms more modern than the PS2? This is your chance to make your voice heard. Check out the official survey or, if that link fails you due to server overload, check the backup document.

"Porting older games is always a huge challenge for us, and we can't 100% guarantee that any of these options can happen," notes the survey. "But, even if a port only has a 1% chance of coming together, your vote could be a big step in making that dream come true!"

So go ahead and weigh in, if you have an opinion on the matter. Maybe someday soon we'll be able to play a genuine copy of Rule of Rose without shelling out $300 or more on eBay. I wouldn't complain about that!

Crossing my fingers for a Rule of Rose port so I don't have to either shell out a bundle for a used copy or attempt to pirate it.

That's exactly right. Rule of Rose feels like a must to me, just because of how much it goes for on eBay. I like to support developers, but buying an old copy for $300 doesn't support them and for my trouble, I get a game I may not even like. Paying $20 or whatever for a port to Switch or some other platform is a lot easier to justify. Maybe they could improve load times on Chulip, too. It definitely could do with that kind of adjustment!

Oh, yeah, Rule of Rose. I think I still have that free review copy I got whenever the game came out. Because it was a promotional copy that wasn't for re-sell. Of all the companies that I've gotten physical copies of their games, Atlus was about the only one that did that. That game, Metal Saga and the first Shin Megami Tensei action-RPG spin-off game (had the really long-ass name, something like Raidou Something and the Soulless Army) for the PS2 and Cursed Crusade for the 360. As I recall, the great thing about them being promotional copies is that the SMT game was the only one of the four I actually liked and might have wanted to keep, and this was during the time where I was really cash-strapped and re-selling all those old freebies I'd get to review was something that would help alleviate the cost of my game purchases. So Atlus was putting me in this "Not only is this mediocre, but it's not even gonna put $5 towards me getting something I might want to buy!" mood.
