Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade coming to PlayStation 5 in June
The release will enhance and expand last year's PS4 remake of the JRPG classic.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, an enhanced and expanded edition of Final Fantasy VII Remake from the PlayStation 4, is headed to the PS5 this June. Square Enix revealed the news during the State of Play digital livestream hosted by Sony Interactive Entertainment earlier today.
Arriving worldwide on June 10, 2021, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade features not only the anticipated graphical enhancements, but gameplay and system enhancements to go along with them:
It really does sound like the definitive version of the game, and for a second I was feeling pretty smug about holding off when I saw the PS4 version offered at Walmart for only $40. But then I saw this: "As a thank you to those who have purchased Final Fantasy VII Remake for the PlayStation 4 console, Square Enix are providing these players a free PS5 enhancement update that will include all next-gen visual and gameplay enhancements detailed above at no extra cost when playing on a PS5 console."
I was back to feeling a bit peeved at myself until the press release continued by announcing that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will introduce a new episode featuring Yuffie as the main character. She infiltrates the shadowy Shinra Corporation to steal a powerful materia and restore glory to her homeland. Players will meet new characters and "enjoy an expanded gameplay experience featuring multiple new combat and gameplay additions, bringing a new perspective to the Final Fantasy VII Remake story that cannot be missed."
Actually, though, it literally can be missed. To play it on your PS4, you'll need to purchase it as a standalone episode from the PlayStation Store. And if you had the disc version of the PS4 game, you can only take advantage of the digital upgrade if you also own a PS5 console with a disc drive. So all in all, I'm still glad I didn't splurge on the PS4 version.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be offered in a physical and digital standard edition, or as a digital deluxe edition on the PlayStation Store. The deluxe edition includes a digital mini-soundtrack with songs such as "Descendant of Shinobi," as well as a digital artbook. You can even preorder if you like, and in so doing will lock down the bonus Cacstar weapon to use in the Yuffie-themed episode.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, as well as the PS5 enhancement update and the stand-alone episode starring Yuffie, will all be available for the PlayStation 5 worldwide on June 10, 2021. It's a good time to be a Final Fantasy VII fan...
