The game is headed west in the fall and you can already preorder a limited edition if you so choose.

The Caligula Effect 2 is headed to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in North America later this year, NIS America announced today. Due for release by FuRyu in Japan as Caligula 2, the localized version is expected to arrive this Fall in standard and limited editions.

The game's premise is that a virtuadoll named Regret created a world known as Redo, where it imprisons people and their past regrets in a tightly controlled simulation. Now a virtual idol has broken into that virtual world with memories of the real world, which inspires a group of students to create the "Go-Home Club" to fight against their prison and the enforcers who keep them there.

Story scenarios are produced by Tadashi Satomi (Persona), as was true of the previous game. Takuya Yamanaka brings a "pulse-pounding, vocaloid-inspired soundtrack" that will help to ensure the experience is a memorable one.

In Tatefushi Academy, players recruit other students to join them in their battle against Regret and her Obbligato Musicians, which requires participation in strategic "breakout battles."

A limited edition of the the game is already available for preorder, and includes the following:

  • The Caligula Effect 2 for PS4 or Nintendo Switch

  • "The Artwork of The Caligula Effect 2" Hardcover Art Book

  • "Regret and χ Vocal Collection" 2-Disc Soundtrack

  • Tatefushi Academy School Bag

  • "Regret and χ Vocal Collection" Digital Download + 3 Bonus Limited Edition-Exclusive Tracks

  • Tatefushi Academy Student ID

  • Collector's Box
The original Caligula game was developed and released for Vita, and released in the west only as a digital title that our critic didn't find particularly impressive. The developers later reworked that game and released it on Switch, PS4 and PC as The Caligula Effect: Overdose. The franchise definitely has some neat ideas and could yet become a genre favorite, but that's far from certain. Do you plan to give the sequel a shot?
