Publisher PQube announced today that it has partnered with Dual EFfect and Abstract Digital Works to bring Tormented Souls to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and PC later this year. The survival horror title will be available both physically and digitally.

Just a quick look at the available screenshots makes it clear the developers were influenced by genre classics such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The press release promises "a modern take on the fixed-perspective adventure" those older games used to ratchet up tension and frustrate uneducated heathens like me who dislike tank controls.

The game begins as its heroine, Caroline, wakes up naked in a bathtub with decrepit medical equipment attached to her body. She's in the small town of Winterlake, there to investigate the disappearance of twin girls. Now she must fight for her own life if she hopes to escape "the decrepit hell in which she finds herself."

As Caroline explores the mansion, she'll find she is far from alone, and that the dark forces swirling around her may not even hail from this dimension or time. They'll do whatever it takes to prevent their secrets from escaping the mansion grounds, and it seems safe to assume murder is not out of the question.

"Featuring improved control scheme and more dynamic camera, Tormented Souls strives to retain everything that made classic survivial horror titles so beloved by fans whilst taking advantage of the power and depth of experience made possible by next gen hardware," notes the press release.

Tormented Souls will be available as a physical disc or cartridge on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, and PQube has teamed up with FunStock to ensure physical collectors also get a collectable "Sun and Moon" coin like the one that appears somewhere in the game. There was no word of a physical release for Xbox Series X.

Though the survival horror genre has evolved toward a purer action-fueled approach in the more recent releases of note, there's no doubt an audience remains for a more classic approach such as the one Tormented Souls will feature. Are you a fan of that style, and are you interested in learning more about Tormented Souls ahead of its eventual release later this year?
