Today, during Sony's presentation revealing many more details about the upcoming PlayStation 5 console (including the lineup of launch window software), Square Enix and Luminous Productions announced Project Athia. The game's name will likely change before it is released on PC and as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive.

The game's teaser trailer, which we've embedded below, didn't reveal much in the way of concrete details. A young woman walks through the crumbling remains of a city, dressed in modern clothes, as a monster skulks in the background and vague texts serves as the glue that holds together a few brief clips. Then we see that same young woman (probably), this time jumping along a series of perilously high ledges in a considerably more rural environment before battling monsters that resemble the beast first glimpsed closer to the start of the proceedings.

Nearer the end of the trailer, there's an extended look at a dragon that could easily come right out of a Final Fantasy title, and then the teaser concludes with the promise the game is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC.

Project Athia, or whatever it ultimately winds up being called, is the debut release from Luminous Productions, which was founded in April of 2018 by the Square Enix Group and tasked with handling development of smartphone and AAA titles that run on the "Luminous Engine." The studio's goal is "to create games unlike anything experienced before, fusing the world's latest technologies with art."

Though it looks lovely in stills and in motion, Project Athia doesn't necessarily scream "never experienced before," but that might well change once we know more information about it. In the meantime, we'll keep you informed of any exciting new details relating to Project Athia and other major games announced during this busy season that was originally supposed to include the E3 2020 convention.
