Tozai Games has announced it will bring its R-Type compilation to Nintendo Switch and Steam late this year. The collection, known as R-Type Dimensions, features the first two games in the series (the obviously titled R-Type and R-Type II).

R-Type Dimensions is not a new effort. It released around four years ago on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and our critic thought it was okay at the time.

"Dimensions provides a perfectly acceptable option for playing on a modern system, even if it only contains the two most offered games in the series," Jeremy Davis wrote in his review.

The game has apparently been tinkered with since, and boasts two new features: full power-up mode, which allows players to power their ships to maximum weapon in Infinite Mode, and Fast Forward, which allows players to speed up the game in all modes. On the Switch, the game will also boast in-game achievements.

One especially nice feature is the ability to play through the games in their classic forms or their visually/aurally updated ones at the push of a button. There's also a "Level Select" option, so you can practice up on difficult stages before attempting to clear everything in one glorious run. And to go with Fast Forward, there's also the option to slow things down, like you're playing with an old turbo controller or something.

There's no definite release date available just yet, nor is there news on the MSRP, but expect that to change soon as 2018 oozes toward its conclusion.

I'm excited for this. Although, I didn't love it when I had it on the 360... I think I just miss the series, and Rigid Force Alpha really has me feeling nostalgic.

I have it on PS3 but haven't even played it... and yet I want to get it on Switch. I would like to have pretty much everything on Switch, actually, and developers are working to make that possible. Give it another couple of years and we'll probably be able to play most of the greatest games from the last 10 years on that hardware. We're certainly headed in that direction...
