Capcom pushes Resident Evil 6 up to Oct. 2

Resident Evil 6 image

The T-Virus arrives a little earlier than expected this year.

Initially scheduled for a Nov. 20 release, Capcom announced yesterday that the console versions of Resident Evil 6 will be pushed up to a Oct. 2, 2012 release. The company made the announcement in the same press release that confirmed its plans for Lost Planet 3 in 2013.

The Windows PC version of the game will "follow" the release of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. And that is totally not vague in the slightest.

As previously reported, RE6 takes place in 2013, in the fictional Chinese town of Lanshiang. Players will assume the role of both Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield and guide them throughout their zombified journey with an "evolved" control scheme that will allow players to "shoot whilst moving."

Less than half a year to go, folks!

Man, I sure as heck hope the new guy isn't that lamer Steve Burnside from RE: CVX as many have been suggesting.

Yeah, I read that too on another forum. I think it's just the cryptic way Chris says "Have we met" that's leading people to believe there's more to him than they're letting on.

If it's Steve though I'll be annoyed.

Edit - It could also be in relation to him being the son of Wesker.

Aside from the cameo by Sherry, that trailer didn't do much for me. The last thing RE needs is Wesker offspring. RE7 should be about Barry travelling back in time and striking Wesker from the canon once and for all.

The Chris/Leon encounter sold it for me. They've always been two enigmatic characters that had strong ties to one another but never actually interacted face-to-face. A lot of long time fans have been waiting for that moment, me being one of them.

I'm with True on this. What sells me on this game is that it's like a big convention for all the RE characters. I mean, some Resident Evil characters have been on the bus for so long that it's almost like they are from another series at this point. Putting them together in one game is like that anime Tsubasa or Dissidia, only with the added benefit that it's actually canon. And I hadn't even considered a Leon/Chris conflict over Ada but now that I think about it... yeah, of course. That meet-up has been destined ever since Leon stole Chris' Unicorn medal.

For the son-of-Wesker, that was pretty much hinted at (and then you were beaten over the head with it several more times) in the Mansion DLC for RE5, so it doesn't come as much of a shock to me. I'm just glad that they aren't bringing back actual Wesker. !@#$!, though, if he pulls a Sephiroth a la Advent Children I'm going to stop playing the series.

As for returns, I see we finally find out what happened to Rebeca. I was beginning to think she'd been offed by Chief Irons. With that cleared up, we pretty much know what's happened to all the STARS members, except now Barry's appearance in Gaiden is non-canon (the game has been designated non-canon by Capcom) so who knows where Hairy Barry is.

And Sherry's back! Jesus, that took a long time. Also, Huntington. Who is wearing her glasses again. Finally dispelling the rumour that she was Ada in an incredible disguise. !@#$! fanboys....

There are some other characters I'd still like to get the final word on. Nicholai, and Carlos Olivera from Resident Evil Nemesis are people I'd like to get some word on, but Billy Coen is the one I'm most curious about. I mean, the other two I can more or less guess.

Nicholai, wherever he is, is most likely still working for Umbrella and probably hasn't gained any morals or ethical values in the last however-many years. A good writer may have actually retired him from the business and have him living an expensive retired life, just an old war horse frustrated at no longer being able to run with the younger stock.... but I said "good writer" so I'm not expecting this. Nope, more likely a stock villain waiting to come back. Why they didn't use him instead of the bizarrely introduced Krauser in Resident Evil 4 still blows my mind.

Carlos is kind've the opposite. He's basically a spanish Kyle Reese in the Resident Evil universe. Very much the "come with me if you want to live" type. Diametrically opposed to Nicholai, we can only assume he'd be replaying the same "stock good guy in the wings" role. Knowing Capcom he'd be introduced during some dramatic cutscene where he jumps in with signature machine gun to save the main characters. Sigh.

But Carlos does come with a question. He escaped Raccoon City with Jill (oops, spoiler) and one would assume that two survivors of the apocalypse would, you know... keep in touch. Maybe text each other once in a while to share netflix reccomendations. So what the hell happened to him and why isn't he given any mention in Jill's subsequent appearances? Well, because it's Resident Evil. But it does make you wonder. I mean, with all of the mercenaries showing up in the aftermath of Umbrella's fall (not much of a fall, really) I'm surprised he hasn't popped up. But I don't know if they'd do anything interesting with him even if he did. Hopefully they keep the same terrible voice actor:

"c'mon jeel. We gotta geet outta da ceety. Andale."

Hilarious.

So on to Billy. Billy has a lot of things going for him as a character. Mystery, for one. We never found out the full details of his past, though it seems to be connected to the African setting of Resident Evil 5... making the question all the more tantalizing! He also has moral ambiguity. In a series where many of the characters are clearly "good" or "bad" (or pawns who don't care, such as Hunk) I can only think of Ada and Billy as being truly morally ambiguous. Billy definitely acts the good guy in Resident Evil 0, but it's hinted that this is because (a) Rebecca wears tight pants and (b) because he needs Rebecca to survive. One suspects that in most situations, Billy might go to great lengths to hurt his enemies and retain his freedom, maybe extreme lengths. It kind've makes him the lean-more-towards-good version of Ada. Because we don't fully understand what he did in Africa, we can't fully judge his character or how far he's gone in the past.

Finally, Billy has maybe the best and least convoluted motivation of any character in the series to be involved in further games (except maybe Sherry, if she hasn't forgotten the art of human speech after being locked in a cage for twenty years). He worked for Umbrella, was betrayed by Umbrella, was framed by Umbrella, was sent to one of their research facilities to be experimented on, escaped with the help of a STARS member, saw the horrors of Umbrella's experiments, and escaped without clearing his name by being listed as dead by Rebecca.

Now, in a normal life, Billy would go into hiding for the rest of his life and pretend he's never heard of Umbrella or zombies or short haired medics in tight pants. But it's Resident Evil, so instead he'll want revenge. And he's got the back story to support it.

Anyway, I just think there's a lot to work with there.

Now if only Tofu would show up.....

That, and where the hell is Claire?

zippdementia posted April 12, 2012:

Claire showed up in Degeneration, the (dare I say) CGI film that is sadly canon. There she reunited with a Leon who didn't have hinged limbs and had to be wheeled from scene to scene in a stiff standing position (watch the film, you'll see what I mean). Plus she had a big role in Code Veronica and finally met up with Chris, which for me concluded her storyline. Well, except for the whole "she lost Sherry" bit, but they don't talk about that in either Degeneration or Code Veronica, which leads me to believe that Claire is an idiot.

I also have to express that, despite my enjoyment of this trailer, I can't help but wonder if Capcom has revealed too much with it. Like, it would have been awesome to be surprised with the whole Leon vs. Chris plot point, rather than go into the game knowing that's coming somewhere down the line.

I don't know about the Wesker-kid story... that might be one of those things where it's good to get used to the bad news now rather than have a nasty surprise mid-playthrough.

Uh, there were almost no monsters in this trailer! In the words of Basil Fawlty, 'What's the bloody point, I mean what is the bloody point?'

If this trailer is a true representation of the game (which it probably isn't in some capacity) the game title should be 'Military Dickheads Hold A Dick Measuring Contest'.

For teh win!

In CAPCOM'S potential defense (because I'm hoping the game is good) this isn't a gameplay but rather a story trailer, so I wouldn't expect to see anything other than cutscenes.

You mean the Resident Evil logo? Is it because of the growly voice wheezing out "Resident Evil.... sii-ix?"
