The unfortunate reality is that the site loses me around $40/month, even factoring in current Patreon support and revenue from ads. But I keep the site around because making money isn't the point. Would I like to generate revenue, so that I can pay myself and others to work on the site and continue improving it? Absolutely. But the site has operated at a loss for most of 20 years, and I'll keep it around as long as I can afford to do so because I like what we've built here and I'm excited about what the future holds.

Side note: lately, the site seems to be doing slightly better than it was for a while, showing up more often in Google search results and attracting more traffic. Views to individual pieces of content on the main site and on the blogs seem to be up, and most of the right numbers are moving (slightly) upward. I have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes these past few weeks and plan to continue doing that as possible, so there's no less reason to be optimistic now than there ever was... as long as people continue contributing, reading and commenting in response to site content. With the framework now mostly in place, it pretty much all comes down to that!
