Hey, let's all talk about the new site stuff here...
October 23, 2010

... because I don't want to take away any more from A-man's kick ass article. I'm happy to host it on my blog/forum-equivalent because I inadvertently started this whole thing.

I don't really have much more to say, myself. I'm definitely going to respect the wishes of the HG staff and not publicly suggest that people post things on our sister site. I do want it to be clear that I'm not, as Leroux seems to think, aggressively recruiting for Gameroni. My suggestion to Aschultz was done in all innocence with big blue wide eyes as designed by Walt Disney himself.

Most recent blog posts from Jonathan Stark...

Question: am I not allowed to post links to Gameroni reviews here, if I think it's actually something worth reading? For instance, in a recent fallout thread I posted a link to the Gameroni review of said game (a) because there isn't one here yet and (b) because I thought it perfectly summarized what we were talking about on the thread. Is that going to be looked down upon in the future?
EmP EmP - October 23, 2010 (04:43 AM)
If you want to plug your off site stuff, then that is what your blog is for. Be sure to uncheck the box so it stays there and doesn't bleed onto the forums.

Pimping out Gameroni otherwise is something both pointless and annoying. Anyone on HG who cares about the site is already there and everyone else don't appreaciate the ham-fisted attempts to treat HG as any more of a feeder site. All three of the remaining worthwhie staff have already made this pretty clear; I don't see what's left to discuss.

If there is anything else that's somehow unclear, then doing it here is better then continuing to derail Schultz's topic. Get your questions out of the way now, because the topic is already starting to grate.
Leroux Leroux - October 23, 2010 (07:45 AM)
As far as linking articles of interest worth reading, anything from Gameroni is going to be met with groans here because we all know about the site at this point and we all either check it out or don't care already. You're not exposing the work to any sort of new audience, at all, so what's the point? Start the discussion over there and be weary that blood_omen linking to a GameSpot article to provoke discussion is different from using a Gameroni article to do that, if only because the very existence of your site has directly affected this site in no positive way, everyone here is already well aware of Gameroni (thanks for making it a topic again) and we've lost key contributors to it. We wish nothing but luck on your venture, but don't be ignorant to those circumstances.
zigfried zigfried - October 23, 2010 (08:42 AM)
Zipp, your question has been succinctly and clearly answered above, so I'm going to use my obligatory post to make a point from a different direction.

HonestGamers and Gameroni as sites have different focuses. HG is a community hub -- forums and user submissions are critical to HG's continued vitality. Gameroni is different: content rolls rapidly enough that forums aren't critical, and user submissions aren't even accepted. The two places have different audiences for that reason, and will always have different audiences.

I don't think either site gains anything through cross-posting articles. Even when covering the same topic, the approach or content should be different.

If a company sends a free game to HG for staff review, they do NOT want to see that review posted at other places. Likewise, blog-tracking sites watch unique content, so it's BAD for Gameroni if content can be found somewhere else. Because of that desire for original content, cross-posting Schultz's article could establish a harmful precedent for Gameroni -- unless it's deleted from here. And that would just be wrong.

Those kinds of things explain why the sites are so different. Personally, I think everyone should be checking out both HG and Gameroni. Just look at Venter -- he submitted a great review for Vanquish at HG this week, and he's written some great articles at Gameroni (even though I'm not a Nintendo fan, his "growing up Nintendo" articles are awesome).

The best outcome is that both sites do well, and that will only happen by continuing to expand their audiences. If you want to help make that happen, you need to advertise HG and Gameroni elsewhere -- not to each other.

What EmP and Leroux said.
zippdementia zippdementia - October 23, 2010 (10:34 AM)
Well, good. I'm glad I made this topic so that this could be discussed without further impinging on someone else's topic.
honestgamer honestgamer - October 23, 2010 (12:13 PM)
Zigfried's thoughts on the matter match my own, point by point. I would like to take a moment to reiterate, though, that I want nothing more than to see both sites thrive.

Gameroni has been making tremendous progress these past few weeks and I'm excited about that. HonestGamers, though, needs to remain relevant and exciting... and I believe that it's doing precisely that.

There's some exciting new content here at HG, such as the Sunday Cabaret, that I'm extremely pleased to see each week. There are some efforts to revitalize the reviewer community--a core part of the HonestGamers identity since its inception--that are thrilling and represent the sort of push that HG has needed for awhile. In some respects (important ones), HG is healthier since the launch of Gameroni than it was before it.

As Zigfried noted, the two sites serve very different purposes. I hope that any negative impact Gameroni might have had on HG is concluded, that any time the two worlds meet in the future--and occasionally, they will meet--it is a positive meeting that leaves both sites in better shape. This is an important place in time for both sites, with both seeing potential for growth and continued improvement. I'm hopeful that both sites will establish separate, valuable identities in the months to come and that everyone will have separate reasons to visit both sites regularly.

You all know how to reach me if there's something I am doing that is harming that objective. In the meantime, let's just try to enjoy the content that we're seeing here at HonestGamers (and at Gameroni too, if you're one who visits that site) and remember that even if we have different names on our uniforms and are playing in different venues, we're really all on the same team.

HG is healthier since the launch of Gameroni than it was before it.

Yes. Now we're all united in hate and vengeance.

Don't you jerks realize that you're not only fracturing our community, you're fracturing my heart!?

Yet another day to be proud of on my blogs.
jerec jerec - October 23, 2010 (02:56 PM)
I can see this place in time for what it really is. The HGers are still living on the surface after the fallout, but the Gameroni folk have gone underground. Centuries will pass and they will grow deformed and hideous, and will start farming us. But we'll all be too stupid to see it. =/
True True - October 23, 2010 (03:02 PM)
Um...

Isn't that the plot for The Time Machine?
WilltheGreat WilltheGreat - October 23, 2010 (03:26 PM)
Well it's either that or Gameroni will emerge from its fortified vaults in search of replacement water chips, and end up having to save the world from EmP's army of supermutants.
zippdementia zippdementia - October 23, 2010 (05:01 PM)
... which is far more likely, really, from what I know of EmP.

Venteristic.

Okay, Suskie. You're on. It's Death Match time.
Suskie Suskie - October 23, 2010 (07:11 PM)
I wanted to see if you'd be afraid to challenge me too. Guess not.
WilltheGreat WilltheGreat - October 23, 2010 (07:22 PM)

So what's it going to be? Keyboards at twenty paces? Or is this the beginning of a review-off? I think it should be. I think it should be a duel. And I shall be the judge along with... Wolfqueen.
WilltheGreat WilltheGreat - October 23, 2010 (09:51 PM)
Wait wait, I'm unclear on who exactly is being challenged here. >_>

Cool, we have death matches a'going on again.

I say that you both review these three games and the loser buys me a new system of my choice.

1. Athena

2. Hydlide

3. Deadly Towers
Suskie Suskie - October 24, 2010 (12:08 AM)
How about I review whatever the hell I want and then nothing happens.

How about you review whatever the hell you want...and then lay it all on the line?*

* - Sorry for raping your topic here, Zipp, but you're a cool guy and I know it won't bother you.
JoeTheDestroyer JoeTheDestroyer - October 24, 2010 (12:36 AM)
Athena, Hydlide, and Deadly Towers... That's like being stabbed, then being shot, then being forced to watch an Andy Milligan movie.

Honestly, True, this is a far better outcome than I had hoped for with this topic.
