Starcraft (the first one) can consume your life
June 08, 2010

I picked up a copy of this game so I could play it for the first time in 6 years. Goddamn it is a consuming game. With just the single player I've been spending hours a day on it. I feel drained. Amazingly how well this has held up.

I thought the opposite, actually. Singleplayer didn't hold up well at all to me; same problem with almost every singleplayer RTS pre-2002 or so. It's all about turtling and just about every mission lays out the same way in the end.

Multiplayer, of course, is a different story, but I've been out of it for so long that I'm afraid to go back. When SC2 comes out I'll give it a try again.

We were talking about SC2 today, a friend and I... got a little bit into some of the unit issues with SC1:

Silent Wolf says: (10:15:26 PM)

there are a lot more useful units in SC2

Zipp Dementia says: (10:15:42 PM)

Yeah, I do think SC1 had some useless units...

Zipp Dementia says: (10:15:47 PM)

Zerg had the most

Silent Wolf says: (10:15:49 PM)

what i love about SC2, for zerg at least, is there a unit that spawn larva and expands your creep

Zipp Dementia says: (10:16:10 PM)

Terran's had the vultures which were pretty useless, but not much else.

Zipp Dementia says: (10:16:20 PM)

And I don't know if Protoss had any useless units.

Zipp Dementia says: (10:16:28 PM)

Maybe the regular Templar, but then they turn into Archons

Zipp Dementia says: (10:16:33 PM)

Which are very frightening

Zipp Dementia says: (10:16:47 PM)

But the damn Zerg!

Silent Wolf says: (10:16:48 PM)

yeah

Zipp Dementia says: (10:16:53 PM)

Like three or four units that suck

Zipp Dementia says: (10:17:09 PM)

Then again, you can decimate pretty much anything with 12 hydralisks and 40 zergling

Zipp Dementia says: (10:17:16 PM)

Don't NEED anything else

I'm once again starting from the beginning - having now installed it off my registration on Battle.net rather than using my discs - and I'm up to Terrans 6. This should be easy enough, the Zerg in the area can be cleared well enough with a group of Goliaths, my most powerful unit available right now (tanks come in the next mission IIRC). Group of twelve does take losses quickly as they mop up, though, so I might just see about securing that new patch of crystals and vespene gas I've discovered and build a second group while the AI harmlessly splashes minimal attack forces against my bunkers and turrets. So yeah, turtling.

Terran 10 is not a turtling mission, nor are many of the protoss missions.

I've mostly been blitzing, not turtling.

I was horrible with Zerg so I can't really comment on them. Vultures, however, were pretty useful online, being the Terran's only scout.

Yeah, I stand very corrected by having been shown some korean vids. But it's definitely a micro managed unit.
