As far as this group project is concerned...
We have to do a project on an immmigrant community in the city... Our group chose Jamaica. Each of the five of us has to go to a specific site that might be important to that culture (i.e. restaraunts, cultural centers, religious centers, media, etc.), and ask people about their experience there and stuff.
Well, I've decided to be the miscellaneous one, as in, going to a place that isn't a requirement. Well, first I chose a professional organization, but their locatioin is too out of the way. I might call them and see if they have a representative closer to here or something, though...
I think the soccer club I tried looking at was turned into a law office or something, because I called them yesterday and the voicemil thing sounded like "lawyers", but it was really hard to tell. I also don't have a location for that place, so I can't check it out physically.
There's apparently a cricket club near here, too... (LOL), but I went there, where the address was, and it turned out to be a house. So... Now I'm stuck. The last thng I can possiby do is look into Reggae, but I tried googling it yesterday and it turned up nothing specific, certainly no organization or anything.
And the best part is it's all due next Friday. And I'm going home in an hour. Yay!

EmP - November 26, 2008 (03:05 PM) Watch Cool Runnings then claim it was a Jamacian sports event you visited. 'Nuff people say you know they can't believe! |

wolfqueen001 - November 28, 2008 (02:32 PM) What's Cool Runnings? I'm seriously thinking about making something up for this. Like I'll use the real place but make up the experiences and the cultural importance or whatever because I can't find the people I need to find and my groupmates are being gits by not talking to me or helping me with anything. |

You're looking for some sort of nerve-center that doesn't exist, presumably because the immigrants have managed to bring their disparate identities together. Don't fake it. Do you really think that your teachers don't know how to use the internet and see that X-event doesn't exist? |

wolfqueen001 - December 01, 2008 (06:35 PM) I've decided not to fake it. And if I had, it would've been a real event, just with a made-up experience, so there'd be no way he'd know. Anyway, the one place I was looking at turned out to be real after all, even if it is just a house. I tried contacting the occupants, got an answer, but had difficulty conversing. She told me to call back a half hour later, which I did, received no answer so called every half hour until my next class, and left a message. When that was done, I tried calling again, only this time, it went straight to voicemail after the first ring, implying that she really didn't want to talk to me after all. Perhaps I handled it badly - I dunno - but whatever the case, I'm strongly thinking of just stopping in and saying "hi". Though I can't blame her for not returning my call. Must be weird to have some stranger, student or no, call randomly asking for info about the Jamaicain community or whatever. |
