Beat Mystic Quest and enjoyed it. Maybe I just like simple stuff, but the way the enemies changed appearance as you whittled them down was brilliant. Seeing a glamorous harpy type losing all her hair and clutching her long nailed fingers to her bald head was hilarious. Guess I'm easily amused.
Decided to try and improve some of my old reviews. Shadow Madness for one. It's still rough around the edges, and the old, 'stick the bad things at end' is there, with a cursory glance at the graphics, but there's only so much time...
Anyhow, I've submitted it here.

zippdementia - February 02, 2009 (07:32 PM) To be honest, I enjoyed Mystic Quest as well, but that was years ago. Every time I've played it since, I like it less. Definitely the best things about it are the music and the changing graphics. But it's RIDICULOUSLY easy and there's no development to the characters. The humour is aimed at a 10 year old audience as well. No, the one that I feel is under-acknowledged is Secret of Evermore. |

threetimes - February 02, 2009 (08:41 PM) I agree! There is nothing 'funny' about MQ, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed playing it, and I don't mind at all if an RPG is easy. However, SoE is wonderful. I much prefer it to Earthbound, which I played more or less at the same time after being told how great it was. I was underwhelmed. Pink poodles rock, and should be in all RPGs. |

zippdementia - February 10, 2009 (12:58 AM) For me, an easy RPG often leads to a boring RPG, since most RPGs consist of selecting "attack" and/or "magic" over and over and over and over and... well, you get the point, I'm sure. Mystic Quest, near the end, starts putting so many enemies that you have to fight in your way that my eyes began to glaze over. Also, you know the cheap trick with phoenix downs? Enemies are pretty much all "zombified," so that casting life or cure on them kills them pretty much instantly. Even the final boss. Back to SoE, that game really is amazing. Okay, so the story's a bit weak, and the gameplay practically begs for co-op, but it was damn IMMERSIVE. This was thanks in no small part to Jeremy Soule, who has since gone on to garner fame as the composer for the Elder Scrolls. SoE was his first game. I love Earthbound lots, but it's another one that's pretty stupidly easy. However, it's great style makes up for it, in my mind. I haven't been able to beat it in years... it just doesn't hold my attention the same way anymore. Every time I play SoE, on the other hand, I'm retransported to that world. It's too bad video games weren't very mature then. SoE actually has the beginnings of a fairly dark plot, rich with anarchist and esoteric themes alike. But none of these are developed much, leaving only vague hints that nonetheless end up being haunting. But yeah, it's really the music that brings it all together. |

threetimes - February 11, 2009 (10:13 PM) The whole 'easy' thing, doesn't really effect me that much. I don't want to spend hours having to level up just to defeat the boss. Earthbound I found hard at the end, (even though the boss fight was easy), but getting to it was a pain. SoE was hard at first, but got a lot easier as the game progressed. My dog was a powerhouse by the end. But MQ was wonderful. Being able to defeat the final boss within about 30 seconds is my idea of fun. :D |
