I thought about picking up the "final" issue of EGM at the newsstand, but 6 bucks for 40-something pages of very little content and sentimentality, a hollow shell of it's former self...it's a sad way to go out. EGM is the third of my favorite gaming magazines to die..the other two being GameFan and Next-Generation Magazine. i wonder how shit like GamePro can still outlive all those great magazines..

even though i hardly read through an issue of EGM but maybe once a year, it was a part of my gaming life from 1991 to 1999(i definitely liked the days of EGM before Ziff Davis took over, those were the golden days.) and so for that i am sad to see it go

RIP EGM

I actually like GamePro more than I did EGM. So to each his own, I guess. I just didn't really expect EGM to go down before other less successful magazines. I guess that's what happens when you tie your future to other ventures. If EGM were just EGM and not tied into other stuff, would it be dead?

that's hard to say.. it's possible they could've survived had they not handed ownership over but the editors and writers would have to sacrifice alot, mainly money to keep the magazine alive. that takes passion and determination so who knows? it would sound better to hear the editor-in-chief pull the plug, instead of an executive of some media company determining the fate of your magazine. it seems GameFan did that and look how that turned out... http://www.magweasel.com/wiki/Gamefan

but at least it was sort of a successful venture for EGM for awhile. it probably wouldn't have the extra readership that it had with the help and bigger funding of Ziff-Davis but in the process EGM had lost some of it's soul by tidying up and losing some of it's fanzine roots. that's the trade-off. perhaps the writers lived a little bit more comfortably too.

btw, i don't know too much about the print magazine business on the inside but i'm guessing it's probably cutthroat and tough to make a profit. and i can't believe there's over 2 million subscribers to GameInformer according to magweasel.com,...i would've guessed maybe about a million readers, but then again i'm not surprised how they achieved those numbers..
