Going to see Romeo and Juliet tomorrow for school. May sound stupid, but for some reason I'm actually looking forward to it...scary.

I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers last night and met their drummer today. If I'm very, very lucky there's a chance that I'm going to appear in their next music video! I'm not counting on it, though.

Oh, and the Mars Volta are the worst live band, ever.
Halon Halon - October 18, 2006 (07:14 PM)
Oh, two things just before Genj gets pissed at me for saying something he likes sucks:

1. I saw them. Well, I wasn't really paying attention, but I could hear every note.

2. I'm obviously not a fan of their studio work, but that stuff is godly compared to their live stuff. Some people were even covering their ears; that's just how bad they were.
Genj Genj - October 18, 2006 (07:49 PM)
Of course they were covering their ears. Chili Peppers fans and The Mars Volta don't mix. They want more mainstream, fairly uncomplicated funk rock and not experimentation, free-form jazz, and lengthy improvization.

Also I saw The Blood Brothers play in an intimate little indie music store, which was awesome. They screamed a lot about swans and stuff. Much cooler than anything the likes of HUMP DE BUMP.

I'd rather listen to all of their [TMV] albums then attend a Mars Volta concert. That's just how bad they are live.

Well they didn't play Hump De Bump. But they did play Give it Away, I could Have Lied, Charlie, Right on Time, Tell me Baby, BSSM, Readymade, Snow (this performance might be their next video), Can't Stop, and others. Surprisingly no Under the Bridge; I was disappointed. Great show, though; they really brought it.

Anyways they're playing in Boston in two days (I think). You should go!

I'd rather wait for February-ish when The Mars Volta goes on their own tour. Chili Peppers raise ticket prices, and I'd rather not pay such money for a band that'll sound like a crappier version of the studio albums. The Volta at least has improvization & the occasional antics.
Genj Genj - October 18, 2006 (09:44 PM)
Yeah so how 'bout that Romeo & Juliet?
pup pup - October 19, 2006 (12:53 AM)
This Mars Volta argument is getting out of hand! It's spilling out everywhere.
EmP EmP - October 19, 2006 (09:08 AM)
Then I shall end it forever.

People of the internet: lung cancer > Mars Volta

Thank you for your time!
tristis_iranica tristis_iranica - October 19, 2006 (09:23 AM)
That's like saying dicks are better than wangs.
EmP EmP - October 19, 2006 (12:51 PM)
They are -- and I won't hear otherwise!
Genj Genj - October 19, 2006 (03:45 PM)
As an indie hipster, it's my job to declare my taste superior to others. Since EmP wastes too much time lambasting bands, we've only come to know that he enjoys The Subways & Porcupine Tree. I wouldn't say Young for Eternity was anything past decent, and Porcupine Tree's sound hasn't compelled me to give them a second listen. The Mars Volta uses awesome experimentation and long sections of improvization and jazz to make unique and original prog rock. They are an excellent band for people that want to hear something distinct among the sea of rock artists. To say having lung cancer is better is an exaggerated and moronic statement showing that you do not have the means to explain why you don't like a band and simply want to annoy fans. In conclusion EmP, I'm sorry that The Mars Volta are not mainstream enough for your taste, so you'd better get smoking.
Halon Halon - October 19, 2006 (08:58 PM)
I didn't say The Mars Volta suck (although I do think they do; I just said they suck ass live. Even if you're a fan of their studio stuff you would hate it.

Just out of curiosity, EmP, what music do you like? If you don't give an answer I'm going to assume you're a closet Oasis fan.
Genj Genj - October 19, 2006 (09:18 PM)
Yeah, that's why it's funny that Pup thought we were arguing when all I basically said was that I don't really care, RHCP fans & TMV's music don't really mix, and I that still want to see TMV.

P.S. - "HUMP DE BUMP BADABA HUMP DE BUMP!"

Also Romeo is a total man-slut.
EmP EmP - October 19, 2006 (10:36 PM)
But I don;t like Oasis -- they're the only band I put down MORE than Volta!

And while most of my hate is simply playing along (although I really dislike Volta's stuff), them being mainstream or not has very little to do with it; I'm not swayed by genres, I just listen to what I enjoy. That doesn't include Volta who are a musical mess.

PS: If you can find and appreciate the hidden undercurrents of Romeo and Juilet, it becomes a much better play.
Genj Genj - October 19, 2006 (10:46 PM)
Mainstream has little to do with genre. You can be pop or rock and not have mainstream appeal. It deals with accessibility to the general public, who *usually like uncomplicated, poorly written music (see Panic! At the Disco, et all).

*Note usually means not all popular stuff sucks.
EmP EmP - October 20, 2006 (08:09 AM)
"Mainstream" gets thrown about a lot by people who weild it like an insult. "You don't like our [volta] music because you're not as special as us." It's not the case.

According to the album rating lists Genj infrequantly posts, we agree on a lot of music, be it mainstream stuff or otherwise. The only ones we seem to heavilly disagree on is Volta and Opeth. And maybe Iced Earth -- I forget whether you said you liked them or not.

I WANT to like bands like Volta. I've been out of the music scene for ages because I felt like it was very much stagnated and I'm always happy to hear bands try and break away from the norm. I tried to remember the last album I bought and came up with nothing.

[EDIT: I remember it now. 'twas the Feeder Singles album.]

I keep hoping a new band will show up and renew interest, but while messy efforts like Volta are spearheading the 'experimental' genre, I know it's not going to happen.

I think we're at a musical stage where all the good 'revolutions' are taken and have been done so much they;re now considered 'mainstream'. And that's a shame.

PS: PLAY SPOILERS! She's just sleeping Romeo, you emo tosser!
fenir fenir - October 20, 2006 (11:15 AM)
ya, all the good revolutions are taken. Now, I love mainstream, but now days most of it's pretty much all the same. Every once in a while they'll come out with something good, but mostly its just the same thing over and over.
Extra note: ....I have been scarred forever more by the play. The men wore creepy tights and Juliet said oh happy dagger!*stab*
bexran bexran - November 01, 2006 (07:59 PM)
shouldnt we be talking about how Fenir here went to see this extraordinary play? and the person that was sitting next to her and bugging the crap outta her the whole time? thats a big role here people!!!!
