Explaining games to parents = SERIOUS BUSINESS.
December 11, 2006

So there I was in the electronics section, waiting patiently for a clerk to unlock the protective glass door and hand me a copy of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.

The clerk, however, was having trouble helping a customer choose the right product for her son. She turned to me and asked which would be more approporiate for her 8 year-old, the DS or the PSP. I told her that I'd go with the DS, stating that it had several games that were easier to get into and catered more to his age group. However, I fairly discussed the PSP by stating that it had far superior graphics, multimedia features, and console-type games. Based on that, she came to the conclusion that the DS would be the better choice for her kid. Then she had me hand-pick some games that were supposedly good. I convinced her to get Mario Kart DS, Yoshi's Island, and Elite Beat Agents.

After that, I kinda got bombarded with questions from other parents who happened to be there. I talked two other mothers into getting DS systems for their kids, as well as the new Kirby's Squeak Squad, Advance Wars DS, Tetris DS, Clubhouse Games, and even Phoenix Wright. I also discussed PSP games with another mother and convinced her to get Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Madden 2007, and GTA: Vice City Stories.

Meanwhile, the clerk just stared at me and said that I could have his job for all he cared. >.>

Oh, and my first final is tomorrow. Wish me luck.

A clerk at EBgames asked me for help during a sale, and I had the answer. He was relieved and so was the customer. I don't go into game stores often, but when I do something like that usually happens. I applied for a job at a store like that once and didn't get it.

Yeah, I've had a similar situation but I felt real nerdy afterwards.

This always happens to me, whether I like it or not. Maybe it's because I'm a Water type - I have to heal everything... Anyway, it seems like there are more clueless parents than gamers in stores these days. And I realize that these parents probably comprise 40% of the people that buy games.

I think that we are on to something. Is there really a website that addresses this... with vigor? Because the only likely thing to inform them that's next to the counter is Game Informer, which we all know isn't that err... informative... And trusting employees who are trying to sell games isn't a healthy prospect, either.
