I'm only about thirty some-odd stars in, but this blows away any of the Mario titles in recent years. It's like all those Bowser levels from Mario 64, but much longer and better designed. There are tons of references (some more subtle than others) to previous games as well.
Thankfully, Nintendo didn't make the controls too gimmicky; the A and Z buttons are used to perform the majority of the jumps/ manuevers. The only blatantly gimmicky things I discovered had to do with specialized levels, like tilting the WiiMote to turn during a race, or holding it in a certain position while rolling a giant ball. The rest of the motion-sensor based controls are meshed well with the gameplay; you just have to shake the controller to do the Spin Attack (which you'll be doing A LOT) and using it as a pointer to nab stray pickups.
I'd go more into it, but it's late, and I've got an early start tomorrow. Later, folks.
