Stuck between a key and a hard place

While I travel through SMB2 (The SNES version included in the All Stars+ World version) I encounter myself wedged between the key and the platform as I try to escape that eeriee floating mask that follows you whenever you acquire said key. It was a musing to see how many shy guys went eliminated as Mario was being compressed under the key and the platform he was standing on. Not sure if this has ever happened to anyone else playing this game or if it happened on the NES original as well. I can say that you can indeed escape the predicament, but if you jump underneath the key while its on the edge of that pot you will be trapped once more.
