Not many would assume about a character named Wonder Momo unless they had played her game early in the 80s or had recently heard of her when the character resurfaced in various media and games in the mid 2010s. Wonder Momo is one of a handful characters that seemingly had been vanished into the shadows and memories of gamers back then and in my opinion, should be back in full force as with many others we all had known in our young days as game enthusiasts.

Wonder Momo started out in an arcade by Namco, where the protagonist Kanada Momo, a high school girl, fights off an alien invasion in a setting resembling a theater play where the audience reacts depending on how you perform. When Momo gets enough interaction with said enemies she transforms into Wonder Momo, who gets granted additional attacks plus her powerful hula hoop which is a key item in defeating bosses at the end of each stage. If she receives enough damage she reverts back to Kanada Momo.

The arcade game debuted in 1987 and Momo would not be seen until her unexpected reappearance in 2014, when she makes a comeback in a new game, a webcomic later transferred to a graphic novel, and even an Anime series. Only this time its her daughter, Momoko who takes on the evil alien invaders and has stiff competition from Amazonia, who is another female superhero idol who was inspired by the original Wonder Momo, who also makes an appearance to help Wonder Momo fend off evil. The book, named Wonder Momo: Battle Idol is a compilation of the webcomic that was showcased online on 2012.

The Anime adaptation of the webcomic debuted in late 2014 and would be loosely based off said webcomic. There are tiny differences from it but it is quite colorful and campy enough to watch it completely, which is only 8 episodes long. In both adaptations Momoko is presented as an aspiring Idol who dons the mantle of Wonder Momo after an alien stranger hands her over an orb that grants her said powers.

The original Arcade game was ported to the NEC PC Engin in 1989, then on 2014 a whole new game based on its new version came out for PC and Android devices, which as an article on Kotaku states it plays fairly well, easier than said Arcade original in fact.

Wonder Momo also made other appearances and cameos in various games including Capcom X Namco, Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos, and others.

Wonder Momo is no Strider, but she does have her fair share of status as with the famous Capcom character, as well as Athena from SNK games. It would be interesting if a spinoff of said characters would be made and actually shared with the entire world instead of having Japan hog all the fun.
