Shovel Knight (PC)

Shovel Knight review (PC)

Reviewed on July 15, 2014

There's a certain tactility to shoveling through a dirt pile or catapulting off of an enemy's head that the development team absolutely nailed.
Mugen Souls Z (PlayStation 3)

Mugen Souls Z review (PS3)

Reviewed on May 26, 2014

In a way, Mugen Souls Z works better as an anime than an RPG.
Age of Wonders III (PC)

Age of Wonders III review (PC)

Reviewed on April 15, 2014

Take Civilization V, greatly simplify city management, throw in tactical RPG battles and replace all the ethnicities with classical fantasy races. You now have a close approximation of the addictive experience that is Age of Wonders III. It took a great deal of willpower to pry myself away from the game long enough to write this review.
Bonk's Adventure (NES)

Bonk's Adventure review (NES)

Reviewed on August 05, 2013

There’s a level in which you bash a giant dinosaur on the head, then climb into its mouth and go spelunking inside its stomach. Bonk’s Adventure knows it’s a fairly straightforward game, so it goes out of its way to be adorable.
Adventure Island II (NES)

Adventure Island II review (NES)

Reviewed on June 06, 2013

Adventure Island II is the game Adventure Island wanted to be. The first game was only worth playing for the novelty of its unreasonable difficulty, but this one is worth playing because it’s actually good.
E.V.O.: The Search for Eden (SNES)

E.V.O.: The Search for Eden review (SNES)

Reviewed on May 01, 2013

E.V.O.: The Search for Eden really shouldn’t be fun. It’s an Action-RPG with almost no redeeming qualities, save for its one highly enjoyable system of evolution. The developers seem to have made the game entirely dependent on that feature, and amazingly, their gambit worked. Even though almost all of the gameplay consists of grinding for EVO (evolution) points to further tweak your Darwinian nightmare, the promise of that next upgrade is just enough motivation to keep playing. I find it ironic that a game about evolution would survive purely by appealing to an obscure niche.
Adventure Island (NES)

Adventure Island review (NES)

Hudson’s Adventure Island is Super Mario Bros. on steroids.
Secret of Evermore (SNES)

Secret of Evermore review (SNES)

Reviewed on April 09, 2013

A fresh team of developers from Squaresoft (the company’s North American wing) oversaw development with little direction from the head office. Apparently, their instructions were simply to craft a game about a boy and his dog traveling through a world comprised of cheesy movie environments. Given this simplistic premise and the relative inexperience of the developers, it’s not surprising that the product the team produced has so little in common with most other Square titles of the era.
Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk (PlayStation 3)

Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk review (PS3)

Reviewed on March 13, 2013

Atelier Ayesha is a shallow affair. I like its looks and the sweet music it plays, but it just doesn’t appeal to me intellectually.
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (3DS)

Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan review (3DS)

Reviewed on March 06, 2013

Etrian Odyssey IV, the latest installment in the series and the first to appear on the 3DS, does an excellent job of adding convenience without sacrificing any of the franchise’s charms. And don’t worry: it’s still really difficult.
Mr. Gimmick (NES)

Mr. Gimmick review (NES)

Reviewed on March 02, 2013

Mr. Gimmick (also known as Gimmick! in the original Japanese version) is a creative NES platformer that few people have ever heard of. Strangely enough, the only place outside of Japan where the game saw release was Scandinavia.
Generation of Chaos: Pandora's Reflection (PSP)

Generation of Chaos: Pandora's Reflection review (PSP)

Reviewed on February 18, 2013

Developers these days often try to pack as many features into their games as possible, but, for the most part, those features wind up feeling half-assed. In contrast, Generation of Chaos: Pandora’s Reflection emphasizes a single feature and streamlines everything else to accommodate it.
