Truthfully, I never understood the fame Mario Party recieved. It is a good game with alot to do in it, however it really isn't that fun of a game when you have friends around and there are alot better games you could play. However Mario Party still was the party game to own for around a hundred different games were available to play throughout it. Many of them are button smashers, but a few scattered here and there are fun.
GRAPHICS (15/20): Mario Party came out later in the Nintendo 64 lifespan, so the capabilities of it were better known, and easier to get the most out of the games. The graphics of the games are colorful and decent backgrounds. The characters look fine, and are detailed fairly well. But they are nothing that will stun you by their greatness or anything.
SOUND (8/10): With multiple games to play, there is multiple music tracks to back them up. The music fits the game well, and it gives a nice edge as you work your way through it.
GAMEPLAY (38/55): Mario Party is a game where you work your way around a huge board by rolling a dice and then playing a various mini game at that point. These mini games exist of avoiding ghosts, Simon says, racing games, and so forth. There is a huge variety of mini games. All of them require you to use some skill to win, and although some of them need a repitive required skill, others differ greatly. This makes the game fairly entertaining. You use one of your favorite Mario characters and compete against the other ones to make money. The winner gets a nice collection of dough and you can use that to buy more minigames for the home area of the game. This lets you play the minigame whenever you want to. This helps the game out, for some of the mini games are fun, although others you just get really sick of playing. This way you can pick the mini game you most like. The gameplay of Mario Party was well thought, and has alot to offer. However I do not beleive it is as good as many gave it credit for.
MULTIPLAYER (6/10): This is supposebly a great multiplayer game you and your friends should love, and although the gameplay and variety is there, it just doesn't stay afloat. Mario Party is an ok game to play through, but your friends probably won't keep asking for it.
REPLAYABILITY (6/10): Single player replay is similiar to multiplayer. You can play through those boards for a long time gaining money so you can buy the prizes. This is fun for awhile, but some of the games are hard, however I did deal a good amount of time into this game.
DIFFICULTY (5/5): A very fair difficulty, and a beatable game. You just work your way through all the boards doing various subgames. Some are tricky, but if you lose them it isn't the end of the world. There are enough easy ones to make up for it.
OVERALL (78/100): Mario Party was really one of the first games that basically was created just for party situations. It's a fun game for awhile, but it gets old fairly fast, and really it won't keep the interets of your friends too easily. If you are into button smashers and timing games, and you have alot of friends this a good game to look into. However Mario Party is not perfect, nor is it the god of multiplayer games, as some have called it.
Rating: 7.8/10
