Blargh. I just finished writing a bash review on Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament for the PS2. Does anyone else find it more fun bashing a game than praising it? >.>

In other news, I imported Children of Mana for the DS last weekend. I've never played Secret of Mana that much, so I can't give a comparison. But from initial impressions, it's far better than that pathetic Sword of Mana game of the GBA.

Random Observations from only playing an hour:

-Lots of enemies. I've fought only five at once, but I'm betting that it can go higher. If you hit an enemy, it'll go stumbling back into other foes, thsus setting off chain reactions that can rack up tons of damage. same goes for ramming enemies into walls, spikes, and other solid objects.

-Weapons have primary and secondary functions. You have to hold down on the necessary button for a second or so to charge up and use the secondary funtion. The sword can cut enemies (duh), but can be charged up to deflect projectiles back into foes. The chain his swung in a small circle to take care of larger groups, and can be used like the Hookshot from the Legend of Zelda games. Weapons can be equipped to the A and X buttons and interchanged as you see fit. Still looking for more.

-Magical creatures have multiple uses for its given element. Right now I'm using a dark creature that can fly around in a circle, shoot out small laser beams, or make me invisible depending on how I input the button commands.

-Items can be assigned to different buttons, allowing you to use them in mid-battle, no menu browsing required (unless you happen to run out and have to switch to something else).

-Should you die in the dungeon, you'll be transported back to town. However, you won't lose the EXP you earned while in the dungeon, thus making leveling a fairly casual affair. Come to think of it, the first boss was pretty easy, even for an introductory boss. I hope the next one will be more formidable.

Other Random Notes:

-I'm considering going on a fighting game reviewing spree. My first stop will be all the games I have on the PS2, followed by every version of Street Fighter I have available, followed up by a healthy dose of Mortal Kombat and possibly KoF. Good times.

-I noticed the offer for freelance writing on the staff page, but I doubt my stuff is up to par for the required standards. My reviews are more chaff than wheat, I suppose. I'll keep at it, though.

-It's been 100 years since San Francisco had that huge earthquake and subsequent fire. At least, that's what every professor, student, snot-nosed kid, news anchor, and everyone else keeps telling me every time I look in another direction.I love history. Really. But when I go downtown, I want to spend time at the arcades at the Metreon or chowing down something good at The Embarcadero, not hear the same stories over again.

-It's finally sunny and warm here after almost a month straight of rain. I want it to rain more, dammit.

-I hate writing about poetry, but my major requires that I take the class. We're studying song lyrics now. I have the opportunity to bring in music and explain how it's a poem/ballad/etc. I'm thinking about bringing in "Wonderboy" by Tenacious D.
