I might post this in the main forum if you all ignore this, but so long as I get a good 8-12 bites here then I can keep it out of the way.

despite the fact that we fucked up the first one a bit, particularly with our awful combined judging idea that turned into us writing two sentences agreeing with each other and then moving on, EmP and I would like to run Because We Hate You! again. it was a good idea and we got a lot of fun reviews out of it, as well as confirming the legend that the original Quake is simply a fiction of the internet's imagination and does not actually exist.

if we were masters of internet reviewer psychology then he wouldn't be fumbling this season and I'd have a TT ring, though, so I'll just ask. would anyone be up for a major comp that requires a decent time investment so soon after the TT, or should we wait?

the gist, for those of you who missed it: you list which systems you can emulate, which systems you can pirate things for, and which systems you have as well as a maximum spending limit--with the expectation being that this limit is $0, hence the emulation/piracy thing. it just gives us interesting options if any of you have a few bucks to kill. then we assign you a game in secret which you can choose to reveal or not, and write a review of it.

the judging panel will consist of two nerdy drunkards with huge cocks and an absurd knowledge of drumming and topology between the two of them.

I am interested, and while it might be too soon for some, I haven't actually been spending all this time reviewing, so it would be fun to be on the other side of the fence.

If you make me review Jedi Knight again, though... well I'll have to try again to make it work properly. I do like the game, but modern computers aren't kind to games from that era.

yeah, weren't you having trouble with the mouselook? like one setting was way too slow and one was way too fast? if your drivers were up to date and everything then there's probably nothing that can be done short of shipping my old Win95 rig to Austrailia.

you have to admit that was a good pick, though.
jerec jerec - August 10, 2009 (11:26 PM)
Yeah, it was the mouse that was causing problems. I should check if Jedi Knight runs through that ScummVM program. I'll try installing it now and see what happens. And it was a good pick. I actually did review it in the OLD DAYS. It was one of those short crappy section reviews (1 paragraph for each section! Except Gameplay got 2!)

Here's the final bit of it.

Overall 8.5/10
If you like Star Wars... get this game. If you like Shooters.. get this game. If you like both... you must have this game. Do I make myself clear? Of course I do.

As long as I don't get assigned some stupid graphic/CG/FMV adventure game this time, I'm in.
JANUS2 JANUS2 - August 10, 2009 (11:35 PM)
I'm in. Maybe you should give people two games to choose from so there's less chance of people dropping out?
bluberry bluberry - August 10, 2009 (11:40 PM)
that would be like admitting we only mildly dislike you, Janus. a few people took particular umbrage to their game choices last time, whether it was because they couldn't find/run them or because there just wasn't anything to write about, and we worked with them. giving people a choice, though, would defeat the purpose.

really, though, we tried to keep that sort of thing from happening in the first place. OD was bound to get a Doom mod that time, but I gave him one that's different and easy to work with instead of being 30 more maps of carnage.

Suskie, no promises.
jerec jerec - August 11, 2009 (12:02 AM)
Well, I played and beat the first level of Jedi Knight just now. It's running quite smoothly. I only found 2/6 secrets though, and I was sure I went everywhere. How odd.
bluberry bluberry - August 11, 2009 (12:14 AM)
the revelation I had that I was wondering if you'd agree with back then is that Jedi Knight sucks. I loved it when I was a kid, but now it just... well, sucks.
jerec jerec - August 11, 2009 (01:09 AM)
Well, I generally hate first person shooters. Jedi Knight is one of the few I was able to get into. Mostly because it has a third person mode, and lightsabres.

I got an AIM mid-tourney from Boo that breifly mentioned the BWHY! tourney in between 4Chan links and awful music plugs. I suppose that's as close I get to a say in my own bloody tourney, and I blame myself for including him in the first place.

The real question, which has thus far been ignore, is whether we should go rigjt into the BHWY! post TT or leave room for something lighter to fit in first. There's probably another three weeks of the TT left, which is break enough for half the teams whose seasons are over. It's probably enough time, considering that it'll run a little over a month in full to give some time to zone in on the final game picks for each person, so we're just looking to see if people pop up and demand more time beforehand.

Plus, we're making an advanced list in our head for what awful games to award to whom. Suskie's getting Blazing Rangers.

I'm always open to feeling your hate. Let it wash over me as I emerge unscathed!
Genj Genj - August 11, 2009 (11:22 AM)
I thought this was a cool idea last time but I kinda got fucked over with my assigned games and I ended up quitting. The first game I got was some obscure Japan only Playstation game that I couldn't find an ISO for, and the second was a boring retro RPG with a huge ass learning curve (playing it felt like a waste of my time). So what I'm saying is it may be a good idea try to give games that won't require too much of a time commitment to adequately review. I'd probably be interested in signing up as long as school doesn't suck too much of my time away.
woodhouse woodhouse - August 11, 2009 (11:25 AM)
I'll do it.

I'd love to participate as a reviewer.
EmP EmP - August 11, 2009 (01:20 PM)
Didn't you get Hellnight and Shadowrun, genj?
bluberry bluberry - August 11, 2009 (01:55 PM)
it's not my fault that you're often too busy half-drowning in a pool of your own vomit to hop on AIM these days, EmP. or bragging about how this time, the bone in your knee is coming out of the back of your head.
Genj Genj - August 11, 2009 (03:12 PM)
Didn't you get Hellnight and Shadowrun, genj?

Yeah, I had found a torrent for Hellnight but no one was seeding. Shadowrun was boring. I would have had to put a lot more time into playing the game to write a proper review for it than some of the other entries likely did. If I had just gotten some crappy action game you can finish quickly, I would have just put up with it. What I'm saying is if I enter, don't give me a game that's likely to be long please.
EmP EmP - August 12, 2009 (06:03 AM)
I actually gave you Hellnight because it's one of the better unknown games on the PSX. It got JP/US/EU releases, so I didn't think it'd be a problem to torrent. DE got Shadowrun after you refused it, and he managed to spit out a decent review in half the time you had.

You actually got two good shots at titles I rate highly -- not bad going for a tourney that's entire aim is to display our hatred of our fellow writers. Point being, we might be spiteful our choices at times, but we tried not to be obtuse.
Genj Genj - August 12, 2009 (07:51 AM)
Ummm you don't need to defend the games you picked. I realized that you & DE liked Shadowrun and Hellnight sounded cool but I can't do much about people that don't seed torrents. I'm just suggesting/inquiring whether I could get a shorter game. If that's too hard I won't sign up this time.
EmP EmP - August 12, 2009 (07:58 AM)
Why are people so defensive around me -- I'm trying to nullify your complaints by reassuring you that the picks were genuine attempts to give you something usuable.

Now be nullified, damn you!
Genj Genj - August 12, 2009 (08:58 AM)
I know they were genuine. Believe me, getting fucked over with Shadowrun equated to my own tolerance for the game and soon lack of free time thanks to Grad School. I'm basically saying "heads up, don't give me an RPG." Just say "ok."
EmP EmP - August 12, 2009 (09:04 AM)
Never!

And it's a shame you weren't imagaining that because, for a lot of people -- mainly OD and DoI -- that's exactly what we did.
zigfried zigfried - August 13, 2009 (06:41 PM)
I'm already signed up for more torture (Night Creatures someday soon, now that the TT is over for me) so I don't know what you could possibly give me.

Except maybe Revengers of Vengeance, since that apparently won't ever win one of my polls.

Hey, boo - if you'd just titled this "BHWY Interest topic" I might've jumped in sooner.

Anyway, I might be able to do this provided I'm not overly busy with school and the game I get isn't overly long.

...just as long as you change that awful judging system you had last year or at the very least, respond to requests for fuller critiques like you're supposed to, or in the case of one, in a more timely fashion. =P
bluberry bluberry - August 14, 2009 (09:31 PM)
sorry. I have a job you know! but yeah, we are definitely changing that. it worked out like crap. and I'm offended you don't read my blog posts anyway, don't you like Doom jokes and seeing reposts of GUTS saying nigger cum jizzthroat?
wolfqueen001 wolfqueen001 - August 15, 2009 (09:23 AM)
Haha. Well, you eventually got me mine, so I'm just glad for that. Thanks. And as for EmP, I stopped caring about anything in-depth. Though what he told me about that review a few months ago seemed completely different from what you said he said when he first judged it, so now I'm just confused, but whatever. Still, that doesn't mean I'm not going to stop giving you both shit about it. At least not until this new one's over. =P

As for your blog, I don't understand the Doom jokes since it's been ages since I've played the games and I've never touched any of the mods. As for GUTS, after reading that Aeroblitz thing, I don't think I ever want to read anything from him again. (though I will admit I laughed my ass off when reading it. That's not the point, though.)

=P

Oh, and you also didn't add me to your friends list, so that's really inconvenient when browsing through blogs. I'm too lazy to click on your profile every time to chcek updates every time you post something new and it falls off this list at the side here.
