This game was the first type of Final Fantasy Game I ever had. I loved it sense the start, even though I lost the game. Sooner or later I will rebuy this game because it is one of the best games ever made. Now some believe that this game has no relation to the Final Fantasy series, and in truth they are correct. This is actually part of another series (SaGa) that was given the Final Fantasy name in America. Either way Square had added another game to its famous title, and one that is deserving of that title. Final Fantasy Legend is a very unappreciated game, but one with many great qualities.

STORY (17/20): The story is strange to begin with. You have to journey up the tower to save the world. Along the way you will find interesting story parts and interesting characters. All of these chacters relate, however you main character do not develop much at all. This is kinda a hassle, but everyone around them within this tower will end up evolving into an interesting cast, and it gives Final Fantasy Legend a fairly good store, albeit not a legendary one.

GRAPHICS (10/15): The graphics are ok for a gameboy game, but nothing spectacular. Some of the characters look interesting, but nothing is breathtaking. The enemies are rehashed in each level of the tower, with just new names, and there is no movement of any type during battles. The characters, move, but are set to look like various, things... like humans will always look identical, and while that is annoying, you must understand the weak capabilities of the Gameboy at the time of Final Fantasy Legends creation.

SOUND (8/10): As in all Final Fantasy games the sound is very good, but the later ones in the series have better sound in my mind. The music in Final Fantasy Legend, is typical Final Fantasy music, and some you will greatly recognize. It has the same feel as that of the first Final Fantasy games and for good reason, for it was superb then. There are not to great sound effects in Final Fantasy Legend, however, there is really no need for them seeing there is no in time action.

GAMEPLAY (38/40): This game has great gameplay. As in all of the early Final Fantasy you have to solve puzzles, build up levels for a strong crew, and fight interesting bosses that have a reason for fighting you. The level building is a negative for many gamers, however, it helps you really feel as if you have earned your victory throughout Final Fantasy Legend. The puzzles are very simple for the gamer, and will not hold you thinking for too long, which will be a plus for the average gamer.

The control of the game is great, and not to slow. Sometimes you will go farther then you wanted to, but this happens in many early games. Along with controls, is the simple fighting system where you choose one of four simple but typical categories (Fight, Magic, Item and Run). This is all very simple, and the menus are also very accesible.

The big innovation present in Final Fantasy Legend, is that of the weapon system. Instead of equipping yourself with one great weapon throughout the game, you are limited to the number of times you can use a certain weapon. For example you can use a Glass Sword 50x, but you can only use a bow 30x. Once that number is up, you are no longer able to use that weapon, which means you have to keep your equipment up, if you want to fulfill your mission. This really gives a nice feeling to the Legend series.

All in all the gameplay of this game is very good, and is an extremely fun game to play. There are not too many sidequests but the main story line is so much fun, you won't ever desire going on sidequests. Do not worry of what seems to be repetitive game of getting old, because that will never happen, because legend has that simple thing that always seems to keep it going.

REPLAYABILITY (8/10): I've played this game multiple times, because it is a very entertaining game to go through. In my mind you will never be bored of it, for the storyline is intriguing, and while the game is fairly short for an RPG (only about 12 hours) the game has a complete feel, and one that you will like to go through over and over again. I assure you, that I will play it over a few more times

CHALLENGE (5/5): The perfect challenge. You will not be agravated too much playing this game, but you will have to build up levels early on. The only problem is the machine you have to face later on is very hard, and you better level up before you fight him, because that is definitely one irratating battle. Besides those few very tough points, if you just play it smart and always have weapons at hand, you will end up victorious at Final Fantasy Legend, which in result will be very nice.

VINTAGE VALUE (+2): Final Fantasy Legend is the first game in the SaGa series, and while it does not directly link to its two sequels, you can feel their presence throughout the game. The same feelings such as weapon uses are all present in Final Fantasy Legend II, and you will see the links in gameplay. All in all, Final Fantasy Legend starts off what will become a great series.

OVERALL (87/100): The games graphics and sound are mediocre, but after that there is nothing wrong with it. The story is enthralling and the gameplay is great. You will not regret buying this game if you do. Overall this is one hell of a good game, and it worth every penny that you would pay for it. I do not regret the fact that I have had to purchase it twice, because it is just that great of a game. I can assure you, that if you are an RPG fan, that you will enjoy this classic for the GBA.
