The Simpsons (Arcade) review
"I have played a lot of arcade games over the years, and I have enjoyed a lot of them, ranging from fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom all the way down to side scrolling beat em ups like X-Men The Arcade Game. I remember I used to go to Chuck E Cheeses a lot a few years ago when I lived in Maryland, and there was one game I used to play a lot. The Simpsons. "
I have played a lot of arcade games over the years, and I have enjoyed a lot of them, ranging from fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom all the way down to side scrolling beat em ups like X-Men The Arcade Game. I remember I used to go to Chuck E Cheeses a lot a few years ago when I lived in Maryland, and there was one game I used to play a lot. The Simpsons.
The game was simply addictive and very fun to play. I don't think I have ever had this much fun playing an arcade game. I really wish this game would have been brought home for a console version, because it definitely deserved one. Along with X-Men and some other classic arcade games. Instead, a lot of crappy arcade games have been ported over. I wish this game would have been ported over, because it was one of the most fun games I have ever played.
The basic gameplay was a lot like any other side scrolling fighting game (X-Men, Double Dragon, etc.) but it featured the Simpsons characters! This is big news because the variety of characters in the game is important, because each of the characters has different weapons, which makes the decision important because each of the characters can have different abilities, etc.
These graphics are some of the best I have ever seen in an arcade game, and the game has to be at least six years old, because I remember playing it way back in 1994. And for a pretty old game, the graphics in the game are great. The backgrounds in the game are great, and the enemy and character designs in the game are fantastic. The game looks so colorful, which is good because this is a game based on a cartoon series.
Character designs in the game are simply fantastic. You would expect the character designs in the game to look just like their TV counterparts, and you would be accurate, because the characters look just as good as they look in the television series. Everyone from Bart (with his orange shirt and blue shorts, complete with green skateboard) to some of the lesser characters in the game (Like Mr. Burns) look great. Overall, the character designs in the game are outstanding.
Enemy designs in the game are great, as well. They are well animated, and the design of each of them is great. I like how there is a variety of enemy designs in the game, although I expected there to be more enemies based on the Simpsons television series (although the firemen and police enemies in the first stage were unique, to say the least). I like some of the boss designs in the game, especially the big fat guy in the first stage of the game, he was awesome. Overall, the enemy designs in the game are fantastic.
Backgrounds in the game are awesome, as well. They are brightly designed and very colorful. The detail in some of the stages of the game are fantastic, and the variety of stages in the game are marvelous. There are a lot of different stages in the game, ranging from a television station to a waterfall based forest. There's even an amusement park, and I like how all of the stages run together perfectly. Overall, the backgrounds and stage designs in the game are great.
Overall, the graphics in the game are great. I can find little problem with the graphics in the game, as I encountered little problem with annoying glitches like slowdown, breakup, etc. The backgrounds were well varied, and everything looked like it came from the Simpson's television show. Great job, Konami!
The music and sound effects in the game are just as good as the incredible graphics, and I definitely liked the music and sound effects in this classic game. The music was a lot like the Simpsons television show, but I would have liked to see a little bit more classic Simpsons tunes featured (although adding the main theme at the beginning of the game was a nice touch.) The sound effects were great as well, although there was little to no voice acting, which was a disappointment for me.
Music in the game was pretty good, although it was certainly not perfect. I would have liked to see a lot more classic Simpsons tunes featured in the game, especially stuff like the music featured during the television episodes, like the ''school time'' theme. They did include the classic television show theme, which was a nice touch, but I would have liked to see more classic Simpsons tunes featured in the various stages, but it is not a total loss because the music featured in the stages was pretty good in itself. Overall, the music in the game was awesome, yet I would have liked to see some other music featured.
Sound effect wise, the sound effects in the game were top notch, as everything from voice acting to the sound of the weapons hitting the enemies were featured in top notch quality. I also liked the sound that occured when the enemies came out of nowhere to attack you, as it sounded great. Also, the sound effects of the enemies and your characters dying sounds pretty good, although I would have liked it to seem a bit sadder when you died. Overall, the sound effects in the game are pretty good.
Overall, the music and sound effects in the game are top notch. The music in the game sounds great, although it is not perfect because there is not as much classic television themes as I would have liked to hear. There was the classic Simpsons tune featured in the beginning which is always a nice touch, in my opinion. The sound effects in the game are great, and I lked how there was a bit of voice acting featured in the game.
The Simpsons has always been one of my favorite arcade games to play, mainly because of the outstanding gameplay and control featured in the game. I wish my local arcades still had this game, because I miss playing it sometimes, and I wish that I could play it on a console, but I cannot, because for some unknown (to me) reason, this game was never released on the consoles. This is a shame because the game would have ruled had it been released on a console.
At first glance, this game may seem a lot like your average side scrolling fighting game (in the reins of a Double Dragon or X-Men) but you soon realize that it provides a bit more depth then some of the other games, as well as the fact that it is simply a lot of fun to play, maybe more so than a classic game like Double Dragon. I especially liked the fact that the game has a very fun multiplayer mode, because a lot of the classic side scrollers have either featured not so good multiplayer modes or none at all.
First off, the variety of stages in the game is fantastic. There are a lot of great stages in the game, ranging from a forest to a circus to a television station. There are a lot of enemies to fight in the game, but I like how the enemies are presented in different ways, depending on what section you are in. For instance, in the amusement park stage, there are some enmies comign out of rides, like the tea cup guys. I liked it when the tea cups broke off of the ride and started sliding around the stage. That was funny. There are even enemies like firemen and police officers.
Also, you can play as one of four Simpsons characters: Marge, Lisa, Homer, or Bart. You may think there is no reason to choose between characters other than personaal preference, but you are wrong. Mainly because each of the characters have different weapons. Marge carries a vaccuum cleaner, Lisa carries a jump rope, Homer does not have a weapon, and Bart has his trusty skateboard. Each of the weapons have advantages and disadvantages.
The 2 player mode is very fun. You play cooperatively and the cool part of it is you can combine two characters to do special attacks. For instance, let's say you have Lisa and Bart as the two characters. You can combine attacks to do one attack (which in this case is them screaming away all the enemies). This is definitely a great idea and adds greatly to the already very fun 2 player mode. Up to 4 players can play at one time.
Overall, this has got to be one of my favorite games to ever play, whether it be an arcade game or console game. It is definitely the best arcade game I have ever played. I do wish they had made a console version of the game though, because my local arcade does not have this game. So, I cannot play one of my favorite games of all time. The multiplayer mode is fun, the stages are well designed and challenging, and the game is very fun. The inclusuion of the simpsons theme is simply an added touch. Featuring great graphics, outstanding music, and fun gameplay with outstanding control, and you have a classic game that I wish would have been ported over to the consoles. It is simply a very fun game, featuring great graphics, outstanding music, and the simpsons theme. Great job, Konami!
I used to want to go to Chuck E Cheeses just to play this game. If that isn't replay value, then I don't know what is. The game is simply so much fun to play that it will draw you back time after time again. I wish there would have been more secrets featured in the game, but I understand why there were no secrets featured in the game (this is an arcade game, after all). Overall, the replay value in this game is simply incredible.
This game may be fun, but it can also prove to be quite challenging after a while. I have never had so much fun playing a game, but it is quite challenging as well. The bosses in the game are quite difficult, and the stages are also very interesting, featuring a lot of enemies, which means that the stages are challenging right off the bat due to the sheer amount of enemies in the stages. Overall, this is quite a challenging game.

My favorite arcade game of all time. If your arcade has it, play it!
